Bio
Arun Taneja
Hans was my very first consulting client at Taneja Group, an analyst/consulting firm I started in early 2003. He had founded Elipsan in Bristol, UK, and invited me to spend a week at the company and, after understanding the technology, advise him and his team in matters of technology, markets, partnerships, VC funding, launch, PR and other aspects of bringing a new product to market. At that time, I did not know Hans, except in passing . By the end of the week, I was so impressed with his knowledge and understanding of technology (and the excellent team he had assembled) that I wrote a glowing report for VCs who were considering funding him, and committed to helping with Elipsan's entry into the US market. Hans and I worked together for many years since then and my respect for him has only grown stronger. He is an accomplished leader with a passion for solving IT problems using new and innovative technologies. I consider him a friend, to boot.

Very few have Han's start-up and scale-up skills and experiences. I have known and worked with Hans for almost 25 years, beginning when he was the CTO for Eurologic and I was the CTO for Dell and we partnered to bring some of the first -- and quite advanced -- storage products to market by our newly formed storage division. Subsequently, Hans was an invited and leading member of our Advisory Council at the Silicon Valley startup, Zambeel, and throughout the years we have served together on numerous panels and committees. Hans is an outstanding collaborator and leader and his insights have helped his colleagues and companies and many others (including me) through the years. And, he has 8 successful exits to show for it (not to mention his 8 patents, too). I always looked forward (and still do) to talking with Hans on mutual and shared interests and experiences at all levels. If you are a start-up or scale-up, I can give my highest recommendation for Hans as an Advisor, Mentor, or Non-Executive Director.

After the Exit from Eurologic and Elipsan, I set up a consultancy practice to help other start-ups and scale-ups to solve the problems that many young companies experience: ➡️ Identifying the right markets and route to market for their technology, ensuring their technology meets the need of that market ➡️ Sourcing the right funding at the right time from the right source - and navigating the process ➡️ Building teams and managing expectations of shareholders, staff, customers, and Board. During some of this time, I was also an NED of a technology company I advised called Fibrenetix. In 2006 I founded StorMagic, originally I was Chairman and devoted two days a week to the company, however in 2008 I was asked by the Board to take over as CEO fulltime, I agreed on the condition that my other business interests were recognised and that in the future, once the company was on the right growth path and direction and with a strong management team, I would exit as CEO. In March 2020, StorMagic had grown into a much larger company and revenues were growing strongly with a strong management team in place. I exited StorMagic to concentrate on Navilluso and to once more help other young companies benefit from my knowledge, experience and global contacts. Show less

The sale of Eurologic and Elipsan came with a two year non-compete that covered most hardware development and software development in my areas of expertise. I bought and renovated a derelict farm with my wife and supported her in starting a successful breeding and training business for dressage horses, it is today probably the top breeding stud in the country, breeding many champions now ridden by top international riders. I and my business partners founded StorMagic in 2006 with a vision to simplify the storage and security landscape with solutions that minimize hardware and do not require specialist skills to deploy and manage. More than 1,500 customers worldwide have chosen StorMagic to lower costs, ensure data security and uptime, and simplify operations. Across many industries including retail stores, factories, hospitals, universities and even wind farms and oil rigs, StorMagic is helping organizations tackle the modernization and optimization of their IT infrastructure. To explain, StorMagic is a software-defined storage company enabling hyperconverged infrastructure for enterprises and SMEs managing one to many lean IT environments. StorMagic offers SvSAN, the most cost-effective virtual SAN for multi-site locations, and now into its sixth iteration. StorMagic is making the complex simple for edge computing environments, and is leading the industry in bringing the edge to the core - datacenter and cloud. StorMagic's storage and security products are simple, lightweight and cost-effective without sacrificing enterprise-class features for organizations with one to thousands of sites. SvSAN is a highly available two-node virtual SAN designed for hyperconverged edge and small datacenter sites. SvKMS is a flexible and robust encryption key manager for edge, datacenter and cloud. StorMagic enables organizations to free themselves from cost and complexity - physical SANs, HSMs (hardware security modules), and other legacy hardware. Unlike competitors who try to overcome the limitations of edge environments by forcing customers to adopt over-provisioned datacenter-class solutions, StorMagic has specifically designed it's software for demanding, and often harsh environments where resources, space and budgets are limited. StorMagic has re-defined itself on a couple of occasions and had to weather a significant recession. I remain as a major shareholder. Show less

In 2002 Eurologic prepared itself for sale, the interested purchasers had no belief in the technology being developed in Bristol so it was decided that we would spin it out as a separate company we called Elipsan, I moved to the UK to run the company as CEO, my Eurologic business partners remained shareholders and nominated a Board member but stayed with Eurologic to manage the exit. The aim of Elipsan was to develop Storage Area Networks for the masses with simplified management, based on commodity hardware and commodity networks such as ethernet. Elipsan and it's team were pioneers in what has now become industry standard - iSCSI and IPSAN. All of the technology was software based. The technology was very successful and we exited Elipsan early in 2004. Show less

Three of us left Mentec to start a new company, Eurologic, I was CTO, initial focus was introducing good US technology companies’ products to the European market. As revenues built quickly, we started to develop our own products primarily aimed at the storage market. The market leader was Digital that had developed a modular storage range. However Seagate and others released a range of high performance drives that generated significant heat and vibration. Eurologic developed a storage system that used new techniques based on conduction cooling to solve these problems and ended up replacing Digital as the market leader. Eurologic then went on to develop in the field of Storage Area Networks producing the first functioning Fibrechannel backplane. My team received many patents based on our developments, of which 8 had my name on them. Other Boards I sat on during this time included: ➡️ Sharena Properties ➡️ Richmount Computers ltd. ➡️ Eurologic Research UK ➡️ Eurologic inc. All associated companies, I also sat on the advisory panel of a US technology company called Zambeel. In 1999 Eurologic bought a UK company K-par, a bright group of engineers based in Bristol, Eurologic sold the current products and name of K-Par and converted the group into a research team to solve the problem of Storage Networking over Internet Protocol. Many in the industry believed this would never work – it is now an industry standard, widely adopted technology called iSCSI. Show less

The SBCM range continued to grow successfully commercially, a new company was set-up called Mentec Computer Systems to market the product worldwide, I was asked to lead the technical capability of the company with a particular focus on customer satisfaction. The SBCM range grew in success, eventually replacing Digital as the main supplier of PDP computers and with responsibility for the relevant operating systems. The focus was on real time applications, Digital's focus then concentrated on the VAX general computing product range. Show less

I was given the responsibility of designing a process control computer based on the recently released Digital J11 chip. It resulted in the SBCM70 single Board computer which was compatible with Digital’s PDP11/73 but on a single Board, delivered twice the performance and a fraction of the cost.
