Hannes Hulstaert is the co-founder and the MacGyver of Post Carbon Lab. His fascinations for the disassembly of technical equipment and hacking, reconstructing and tweaking with scavenged materials and E-waste have equipped him with the capacity of mechanical adaptation and improvisation. Born as a vegetarian, Hannes places environmental sustainability and the equality of all living beings at the core of his practice. With a background in architectural science, he has furthermore expanded his creative career to audiovisual art, research, woodwork and speculative design. He also actively takes part in sustainability research and resource/waste management for the food industry. His works and theoretical writings have earned him the Henry van de Velde Prize in 2015 and multiple publications for his unconventional approach towards social, cultural and technological analysis of urban architecture. A series of three experimental films depicting the workshops held at the University of Antwerp from 2017 till 2019. One extra film is the complete overview of those three years. We wander from Displacement into Liminality and end up in Resilience, only to start the pattern again. The poem, written and recited by Dian-Jen Lin, describes the life cycle that the designer endures.

Re-ACT by design is the theme of an annual series of international workshop weeks for master students product development, architecture, interior architecture, heritage studies, and urbanism and spatial planning of the Faculty of Design Sciences at the University of Antwerp.[2018] Imaginarium: Resilient Future SpeculationBy practising techniques of design sprints and scenario building, we conjured up possible visions of future resilience and the participants depicted their own fantasies via 2D and 3D realisations. Both metadesign philosophy and design methodology were quintessential elements of the workshop, everyone bathed in metaphysical yet playful discourses as well as delved into new perspectives of approaching design by processes such as rapid prototyping, mood boarding, mind mapping and speculative design.[2019] Media-Tasting: Why Do You Design?Liminality is not a comfortable space, especially for graduate students. Without guidance and a clear compass in mind, one can easily get lost amid the pressure of time, money, peers and family. However, how many of you know if you are heading in the right direction? The media we tasted included - but was not limited to - fashion design, audio-visual arts, hacking (bio/tech) and food design. Show less
