Three week placement at an adult acute inpatient unit at The Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant. Here I experienced treating patients with complex needs whose care needs cannot be managed within the community. Working within a multidisciplinary environment I learned the core principles of investigation, assessment and intervention.I gained experience of the legal frameworks that support the treatment of patients with mental health issues, including The Mental Health Act 1983, The Mental Capacity Act 2005 and The Human Rights Act 1998. Ty Skirrid is a 12-bedded ward for the Gwent-wide Forensic Rehabilitation Service. The ward caters for men and women who have a mental disorder and have offended, or are at risk of offending and provides on-going psychiatric treatment. The unit offers social and psychological intervention with an emphasis on community reintegration as many of the clients have previously been in prisons or secure accommodation. The unit also has access to local services to provide off site occupational therapy and adult education via the local college. The unit has access to a gardening project in Newport and clients attend on a daily basis.Within the unit clients are actively taught and encouraged to develop daily living skills, e.g., clients are encouraged to self cater from admission via monies supplied instead of ward meals.
