Ty Skirrid is a 12-bedded ward for the Gwent-wide Forensic Rehabilitation Service. The ward caters for men and women who have a mental disorder and have offended, or are at risk of offending and provides on-going psychiatric treatment. The unit offers social and psychological intervention with an emphasis on community reintegration as many of the clients have previously been in prisons or secure accommodation. The unit also has access to local services to provide off site occupational therapy and adult education via the local college. The unit has access to a gardening project in Newport and clients attend on a daily basis.Within the unit clients are actively taught and encouraged to develop daily living skills, e.g., clients are encouraged to self cater from admission via monies supplied instead of ward meals.
