Hannah's passion for conservation and determined attitude made her an invaluable addition to ARCHELON's 2019 Zakynthos Leading team. Throughout her time as CVC, she was confronted with several challenging situations which she handled with great consideration for the volunteers' wellbeing, always offering a caring ear to ensure everyone's needs were met. The job requires a level-headed, respectful and attentive individual that can keep a camp of up to 90 people productive and safe. Hannah was confident and organised with the responsibilities of a project she had never participated in before and ensured the smooth running of the camp throughout the entire season, despite challenging working and living conditions. She is a very capable individual and a pleasure to work with!

Managing the field station and up to 80 volunteers. This involves setting up and maintaining the camp, creating rota’s and schedules, and ensuring volunteers are fed a healthy nutritious diet. Ensuring the smooth running of the project by training volunteers, keeping up team morale and ensuring everybody is safe and healthy. Conservation duties included collecting scientific data, protecting nests, relocating nests. Public outreach was also a large part of the conservation efforts of the project. As a field leader, I participate in and train volunteers to do the following work. Monitoring nesting activity through morning and night surveys. Obtaining biometric data regarding nesting females and placing metal flipper and pit tags. Excavating nests in order to estimate hatching success and to find possible causes of the hatch rates. Whilst on the beaches we also collect data regarding the threat’s and implement protection measures. I was stranding officer, taking any data on stranded turtles and conducting sea turtle first-aid. Updating databases on a regular basis is an important part of the job role. Show less

I spent 9 weeks volunteering at the Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Athens, Greece. Duties including general care for the turtles such as daily cleaning and feeding along with daily medical treatments such as administering injections, giving IV drips, treating any wounds and tube feeding. Along side this, behavioural observations, inputting data regarding the turtles and public education was also part of the role. I also went on many pick-ups of injured turtles and released a number of recovered turtles during my time there. This was an incredible learning experience where I learnt not only about sea turtles but about conservation work, animal management and raising public awareness. Show less
