During a three-month fieldwork placement in the UK I investigated the lives of those living with Energy limiting Chronc Illnesses. The aim of the qualitative research project was to understand the effects that energy impairment has on their everyday lives, as well as to grasp how illnesses of this kind are regarded biomedically and socially. Insights from interviews reflected that energy impairment is rarely considered as a chronic illness or disability, as such many people living with energy-impairing illnesses are unable to attain medical treatment, financial support and social security. Findings discovered during ethnographic fieldwork were used to create a report that reflects ways forward for the UK medical system and how they could better support those with medically unexplained illnesses, such as energy-limiting chronic conditions. During the 6 months of my Internship, I had the pleasure of working with an intellectually imaginative team of 30 anthropologists and design thinkers to innovate ways in which companies, both within and outside of Denmark, could better orientate their services and products to the needs of their customers. Through conducting immersive ethnographic fieldwork, we as consultants came to discover the missing gap between what the company offered and what their customers desired. My role primarily involved working with health care clients, based in the Nordics, and conducting ethnographic interviews among their patient populations. Findings from researched were used to redesign their products and services in a way that optimised the health and wellbeing of their customers. Show less

Within the clinic I worked primarily on the shop floor welcoming customers and guiding them to find products suited to their health care requirements. I worked as a team among knowledgeable homeopaths, acupuncturists, herbalists and nutritional therapists. They shared with me their wisdom and the natural ways of understanding and healing the body and mind. Often I would recommend customers a specific treatment programme that we offered in clinic that would target their ailments. Through conducting anthropological research methods, such as participant observation and unstructured interviews, I was able to understand why attendance rates at the Suubu health clinic (a community outreach program) were low amongst HIV/AIDS patients. I filed a report that offered strategies that could improve adhesion to ART and attendance rates at community-level primary health care facilities in South Western Uganda.
