Summer Camp Counselor

As a camp counselor I worked with youth who reside in the foster care system or are challenged by a medical condition. Working with foster kids presented a lot of behavioral challenges but we worked through what was upsetting to them to get back to camp activities. Cincinnati Children's sent kids to camp based on their medical conditions. Each week revolved around a different condition. We served campers with arthritis, heart conditions, amputees, oncology and hematology patients and diabetic youth. Counselors were responsible for coordinating activities to keep campers engaged, keeping them safe, and ensuring they were having fun. Some of our activities include crafts, hiking, education sessions, and team games. Fostering Success is a program for children who are recommended to it by the Children's home of Cincinnati. Our goal is to empower the children of the foster care system with education and support. Throughout each season with our campers we cover different topics, such as emotional intelligence, Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, and how to respect the environments they are in, both nature and other people. We also take a field trip to one of the educational learning centers in Cincinnati once a year. As a counselor I have learned to be flexible, to be a leader, and to have patience with all. Show less

I was responsible for children ages 2 months through 12 years. I was responsible for maintaining a safe environment, signing children in and out to their parents, and engaging kids in age appropriate play. It was very important to make sure the child was leaving with the correct parent and making sure that they had their belongings. I had to communicate with parents about their child's needs and if another parent was going to be picking them up. To keep kids engaged I played a variety of different games with them, had crafts and coloring supplies, and lots of toys for all developmental stages. Show less

Responsibilities included observing and organizing pool activities, enforcing all pool policies, keeping pool chemicals balanced and safe for patrons, and rescuing distressed swimmers and providing emergency care. I also taught swim lessons for children ages two through seven. Their lessons included water safety, basic swimming skills and how to respond in an emergency at the pool. We want to build up their confidence in and out of the water.
