I am a PhD candidate in the Sediment Dynamics Group (check out our blog: http://blogs.uw.edu/sediment/). We study the connections between hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and geomorphology. Specifically, we investigate the fate of sediment at the river-ocean interface in diverse environments around the world. We examine the impacts of human alteration (dams, deforestation, dredging, etc) on these environments. We study the connections between hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and geomorphology. Specifically, we investigate the fate of sediment at the river-ocean interface in diverse environments around the world. We examine the impacts of human alteration (dams, deforestation, dredging, etc) on these environments. My Master's thesis focused on the impact of the 2011-2014 Elwha River dam removals on sediment transport and kelp mortality around the mouth of the river. This work has now been published. My Ph.D. work is focused on sediment transport in the Ayeyarwady River delta, Myanmar, and in Tauranga Harbor, New Zealand. I am investigating the processes which keep lowlying, coastal areas above sea level over large (200 kilometers) to small (centimeters) spatial scales. And, I am investigating the impact of mangrove removal (deforestation) in these locations. I currently help run the Race Talk Book Club, and I am the Outreach Coordinator for the ARGO club.

Engineering Technician II
-
May 2014 - Jul 2016
I was an oceanographic field technician in the UW Applied Physics Lab. I built, maintained and repaired the ORCA buoys, which monitor water quality in Puget Sound. I also worked on the ChaBa, NEMO, and ESP buoys which collectively monitor conditions off the Washington coast. I carried out electrical and mechanical engineering projects in the lab, and conducted independent field work on a weekly basis. I collected and processed water samples for dissolved oxygen, DIC, chlorophyll, nutrients.

I assisted with the update of the Protected Lands Database by acquiring and managing new spatial data. I am enjoyed the challenge of working with multiple data types and learning more about land conservation. I analyzed and interpreted well cuttings to create a state-wide map of geothermal resources. I created a report for the public on the 16 October 2012 earthquake in Maine using ArcGIS. I updated online material and assisted with public outreach programs. I analyzed and interpreted well cuttings to create a state-wide map of geothermal resources.
