Advocacy Support Officer- Stockton Independent Complaints Advocacy Service
-
Nov 2016 - Sep 2018
After graduating, I worked as a Advocacy Support Officer for the Stockton Independent Complaints Advocacy Service was a Project ran under the Pioneering Care Partnership which ensures the development of the mental and physical health of the residents in the Teesside and Durham locality. I acted as the first point of contact for a client who required advocacy support within the Stockton-On-Tees Borough. I would discuss with the client their issues, confirm legal action is the best course of action to take or I would sign post them to a more appropriate service. I provided them with a self help pack which encourages clients to self advocate where possible. I ensured that the registration process was complete to enable the client to pursue their complaint and then I guided them through the advocacy process. At the end of each quarter i produced a quarterly report which was sent to my senior manager.

The Student Law Office is a award winning pro bono legal clinic located in Northumbria university and available to anyone in the North East region. It is ran by students who are supervised by qualified solicitors.I worked in a family firm of 6 students, working approximately 20-25 hours a week in the firm. We worked in pairs within the firm, i dealt with 4 clients during my time in the office. I managed my own caseload and i was subject to the SRA code of conduct which included carrying out the relative formalities such as client confidentiality checks. It is through the office that i developed an interest in the importance of client care further linking to an interest in pro bono. Having written two pieces on both subjects and also delivering a seminar on the subjects, my seminar was based on the key link between client care and how if a lawyer can develop excellent client care skills it can aid each firm win and retain business. Part of the seminar also touched on the importance of pro bono in the fight for access to justice and how also if done properly it can actually win business for the firm via the pro bono client suggesting the firm to their peers. On a daily basis i interviewed clients, conversed with legal professionals, carried out in depth legal research, complied with my professional duties under the SRA code of conduct and delivered advice to clients both in person and via written correspondents. The Student Law office has led me to have excellent time management skills, allowed me to develop client care skills that i can use in practice and allowed me to experience life in a live law office for a year.
