Our work resulted in a 10% point increase in satisfaction with programming, with 87% of CMs agreeing that the group leadership development and DEI learning content they received from Teach For America (TFA) was preparing them to be better teachers. I collaborated to help design and lead a learning scope and sequence with explicit focus on multipartial DEI facilitation and transformational coaching practices from Elena Aguilar’s "Art of Coaching." Our weekly learning series yielded a dramatic 74 percentage point increase to 82% coach satisfaction in training effectiveness. I partnered with Relay Graduate School of Education to oversee implementation of a two-year masters degree program that tightly aligned to TFA’s vision for Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and student outcomes, resulting in 91% of CM’s identifying that they felt that they were holistically supported by the combined support from TFA, Relay and their partner school. In Spring 2020, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, I led our TFA NY and Relay NY teams through a redesign of the 2020-2021 school year teacher coaching and training model to create a new roadmap of learning that centers on a trauma-informed approach and cultivates anti-racist and inclusive teacher practices in a virtual setting. I also led and collaborated across teams to design, train staff, and execute summer programming virtually onboarding CMs to NY during Summer 2020. Programming results yielded double digit increases across almost all CM experience and programming indicators, including 92% of CMs agreeing that the programming was helpful in preparing them to be better teachers. During my principalship, our elementary school achieved the highest NY State Exam (NYSE) results in the school’s history, outperforming NYS, NYC, NYC Charters and Community School District 15 for the first time ever, effectively eliminating the opportunity gap between our students and those of their wealthier, white peers in neighboring schools in our district. We prioritized developing comprehensive special education and social emotional programming for our students and invested our time heavily in teacher professional development, DEI work, and building teacher collaboration and agency. Central to my work was leading the vision for professional learning centered on anti-racism and growing culturally responsive educators, including the creation of teacher-led social justice and family engagement groups and an equity team focused on student culture practices. We fostered a strong data-driven culture focused on intellectual preparation, using weekly data and instructional planning meetings to drive instruction. I also helped develop the vision and implementation of weekly co-planning and differentiation meetings, daily at-risk/enrichment instruction, strong Tier 2 processes, and the creation of daily socioemotional tutoring and weekly attendance coaching. Our team’s hard work resulted in 20.5 and 28.5 percentage point increases for Math and ELA NYSE data for Students with Disabilities during the 2017-2018 school year. During my time as Principal, our team retained over 90% retention of staff year over year and in partnership with our talented Director of Operations, I managed the daily operation of a $5 million school budget with a budget surplus of over $250K nearing the end of 2019 school year. We also achieved an increase of 17 points on the Math NYSE, marking the second highest performance across the network. Using knowledge from being a part of Fountas and Pinnell’s Literacy Collaborative, I launched Writers Workshop and Interactive Read Aloud programs across 2nd-3rd grade academy, setting the foundation for future years’ curricular model at the school and across the Ascend network. As a Grade Team Lead, I created and piloted a close reading curriculum to inform future curricular practices across the school. I implemented a culture of sharing effective practices amongst grade team members, led co-planning sessions, gave feedback on lesson and unit plans, and held meetings to create action plans based on student data. I built meaningful and lifelong relationships with students and families in the Red Hook community.
