I had the distinct pleasure of participating in the process that recruited Hamish and working with for several years. As CEO of a fast growing and successful 50 person IT company there’s a lot of pressure, never enough resources and always trade offs. The result is you find people who are fantastic and you rely on them or you perish. Hamish is one of those that you could always rely on. Would I hire Hamish again? Absolutely! Can Hamish do the job? Yes! How do I know he can do the job without knowing what the job is? Hamish has several unique qualities. He doesn’t stand around waiting for instruction. He looks for things that need to be done and does them. If he doesn’t have the knowledge, he finds the knowledge and comes up to speed quickly. He’s not afraid to ask for help and is relentless in pursuit of getting better. He’s fully prepared to follow orders - yet always ensures he understands the intent and thus both prepared and positioned to adapt on the fly and find better ways to achieve the objective. He has the strength of character to challenge dogmatic thinking and the diplomacy to gather people around new ideas without offending. Can he do the job? You betya. Because if he can’t…he won’t stop until he can…and then he’ll start work on doing things even better. Can he lead others? Yes. He makes the hard calls. He puts the team first. He’ll push people to be their best and he’ll help them get there. He leads by example and he’ll do all of the above through both good times and bad. We were once forced to lay off 20% of our staff. A terrible event for staff moral and the company. Yet throughout the period Hamish’s team never lost their enthusiasm. Bottom line: he delivers and he’s fun to be around. You’d be hard pressed to find a better than H.G.
