  How can Urban Digital Twins be developed to create sustainable and green smart cities? Rapid urbanization, growing social inequity and anthropogenic climate change, including biodiversity loss, require the development of new methods and tools to address these challenges. Urban Digital Twins (UDT) as digital counterparts for the modelling and simulation of cities, are a promising instrument to solve these crises. However, the representation of the green infrastructure in UDTs, which is one of the most important quality factors of the urban environment, is limited and recognized as a crucial knowledge gap. To overcome this deficiency, the GreenTwins pilot project is developing a layer of green infrastructure in the UDTs of Helsinki and Tallinn. In addition, the project aims to strengthen participatory urban planning, which contributes to the United Nations' SDG 11 entitled "Sustainable cities and communities". GreenTwins intends to develop new user interfaces and platforms to exploit the potential of UDTs in advancing planning processes. The outcomes of the project are facilitating citizen engagement, improvement of democratic processes in the civic society, and taking action against anthropogenic climate change by planning and preserving urban greenery and it’s biodiversity. Urban stakeholders such as decision makers, planners and researchers can take advantage of this research to overcome the lack of flexibility and adaptation of current planning instruments and visualization tools by using more dynamic and responsive planning tools. Ultimately, citizens and activist groups can be engaged in a democratic decision-making process to promote more sustainable and greener smart cities. Show less
