Matthew Liotine, Ph.D.

Dr. Zhao showed a thorough understanding of quality control, operations and supply chain concepts especially as they relate to healthcare management and risk control. He also exhibited excellent people skills, with the ability to communicate some very innovative ideas to classroom discussions. He had also demonstrated very good presentation capabilities. In the year that he had been my student, he had demonstrated a wide breadth of knowledge stemming from his extensive medical practice and research experience, accompanied by his accomplished education and professional credentials of PhD, MD and MBA. I would say that he could be counted on to do almost any job that was asked of him, and his performance would always exceed expectations due to his determination of not letting himself fail.

As a very skillful ophthalmology researcher and expertise in clinical trial, I continue research on AMD and DR. In recent years, I concentrate myself on investigation of “AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1Α, A CRITICAL PATHWAY IN DRY AMD”, we address critical issues of central importance to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Those include: investigating how AMPK/SIRT/PGC-1α pathway could play a critical role in RPE functions and how its inactivity could contribute to the pathophysiology of AMD. The results and conclusions derived from this study will provide important information that could be used for development of novel treatment strategies for a devastating neurodegenerative disease of the visual system that primarily affects the elderly, minimizes their independence, and impairs their quality of life. we have developed an inexhaustible AMD in vitro disease model by isolating native RPE from AMD donors' eyes followed by generation of iPSC, and their subsequent differentiation into RPE (AMD RPE-iPSC-RPE). We have also generated iPSC from RPE of age-matched normal donors (Normal RPE-iPSC-RPE) that serve as control. We confirmed that the AMD RPE-iPSC-RPE mimic the disease phenotypes of their parental donors, the primary AMD RPE, which validates our model. Additionally, we established an animal model to test the role of PGC-1α repression on RPE and retinal health and observed RPE and photoreceptor degeneration. Show less

As an experienced ophthalmologist love clinical trials and researches on retina specialty, I am interested in the potential interaction between microbiome and age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy (AMD & DR). We are trying to study on high fat diet effect on age related macular degeneration model in gem-free mice and also the image of retinal analysis. Our Project title is Role of high fat diet and gut microbiome in macular degeneration. This project will help uncover mechanisms causing AMD and could provide a new breakthrough insight into novel treatment targets and preventative strategies for AMD. My responsibilities include provide techniques and administration supports for projects and research teams. I contribute to the execution of both animal and tissue and cell culture experiments, data analyses and presentation, grant application and manuscript for publications, protocol development, study monitoring, management research team and tutoring some visiting scholar and new laboratory technicians. Also, I participate on study management and/or clinical development teams to facilitate clinical development goals and achievement of study, me contributes to the organization, preparation, and execution of investigator and advisory board meetings in collaboration with project teams and stakeholders. In this duration, I accumulate the experience in determining the host-associated immune and microbial basis for response and non-response to possible treatment for further clinic research choices, and also the administration experience in clinical trial and developements.
