Following two years of work at the project level, I transitioned into this role with a focus on bigger-picture work, leveraging my familiarity with ELI’s diverse projects to advance organizational growth and the development of new initiatives. I took a lead role in writing grant proposals and managing proposal submissions for the ~25-person research department. Successful proposals that I helped author include a $325,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation. I also conducted research on potential funders, coordinated outreach efforts across the organization to ensure effective relationship-building with foundation staff, and facilitated the transition to a donor management database (eTapestry). In-Depth Research: I also took a lead role in a year-long research project for the Inter-American Development Bank to develop a framework for assessing how environmental and social safeguards in the laws of Bank client countries compare to its own safeguard policies. In addition to substantive research, I coordinated with contractors and project directors to ensure efficient progress, presented the results of our work in regular meetings with senior Bank staff, and helped author a final report summarizing the project outcomes.

One of my primary roles was project management for ELI’s Environmental Peacebuilding Initiative. In this role, I recruited and managed a team of 10+ volunteers to support production and publication of a 6-volume book series on natural resource management in post-conflict settings, the first compilation of lessons learned on this topic. In addition to managing this team, I coordinated with project directors, authors, and contractors to ensure efficient progress; helped to develop policy briefs articulating key points from the books; provided research and editing support; and served as the Assistant Managing Editor of the book Water and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding. I also helped run ELI’s National Wetlands Awards program. For two years, I managed publicity and outreach for program, including management of a database of 2000+ contacts; administered day-to-day program activities, including helping to roll out a new nomination process that contributed to a 66% increase in award nominations; and coordinated the annual award ceremony on Capitol Hill attended by ~150 people. I provided research, writing, and administrative support for other ELI programs including a publication on the climate impacts of industrial livestock production, a capacity-building project supporting the implementation of the constitutional right to water in Mexico, and redesign of the webpages for ELI’s Inter-American program, in both English and Spanish.
