I hold a master's degree from the Federal University of Viçosa, and my field of research was natural language processing, it's a subfield of artificial intelligence. The research in this area aims to represent and manipulate natural language, such as speech and text, through algorithms. I worked with a shared task called ASSIN (Evaluation of Similarity Semantics and Textual Entailment), which provided the first corpus in Portuguese for these tasks. The ASSIN corpus is given by pairs of phrases and their respective labels. For semantic similarity, labels represent a value from 1 to 5 that tells you how similar the set of sentences is. For textual inference, the label says whether one sentence is related to the other, that is, if I read sentence A, I can imply sentence B. Or both are paraphrases. Or they are not related. After a couple of sentences is provided, the algorithm should predict its semantic similarity and textual inference. To solve the task, I created an algorithm to process the corpus, computing about 300 metrics for each pair of sentences. From the pre-processed data, I was able to run regression and classification algorithms to correlate the data with their respective labels. In the end, the algorithm reached state-of-the-art results.
