Bio
Nancy Burris Perret
I had the distinct pleasure to work with Greg in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My contracted role was managing the Health Branch at the Hurricane Katrina Emergency Operations Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Greg and I, and several other colleagues, were jointly charged with coordinating the return of health care services to the area. We faced the unique challenge of a devastated health care system, in addition to a devastated community that desperately needed health services. Greg played a significant role in coordinating the re-opening of community health services in geographically appropriate areas throughout New Orleans. This included working with local health care professionals and military resources (US Marines, US Army and Army Reservists) to determine the needed medical supplies for each location and coordinating the acquisition and delivery, as well as the re-stocking of each facility after each was determined to be safe and sanitary. A very significant challenge was figuring out where the people were! Because of the general devastation, people were returning during the day to restore their homes, but were not necessarily easy to find. Greg was instrumental in designing a methodology for estimating the population, by neighborhood, then organizing a team of volunteers who canvassed each neighborhood, applied the methodology and calculated the probable population in each neighborhood. This enabled health care professionals to estimate the health care needs and respond accordingly with adequate services to meet the needs of a population living in a dangerous environment, and doing dangerous things as their cleaned out and then repaired their flood- and wind-damaged homes. I could not have accomplished my job without his very capable help. I'd welcome the opportunity to work with him again. He is bright, capable, well-organized, and thoughtful in his analysis and assessment of the current situation, and creative in developing solutions to the defined problem. He would make a strong addition to any organization. I would be delighted to speak to any potential employer about my experience working with Greg.
