As a Partner at DLA Piper, I represented corporations, financial institutions and individuals in all phases of complex commercial litigation. Collaborating with clients' management and in-house attorneys, I crafted litigation strategies that efficiently and effectively resolved disputes. Additionally, I represented debtors, lenders and other creditors and interested parties in all phases of bankruptcy cases. During that process, I renegotiated commercial contracts, brokered mutually-beneficial settlements and negotiated purchases and sales of distressed assets. I also successfully led teams of dedicated lawyers who defended on a pro bono basis two young men who were charged with felonies. In one instance, we won acquittals for our client after two trials in the Criminal Division of Cook County, and in the other, our efforts resulted in the State dropping all charges against our client. I was recruited to Paul Hastings to tackle the challenge of opening its new Chicago office. Besides assisting with many of the office's "start up" challenges, I counseled sophisticated corporations and organizations through complex legal issues that they faced in connection with corporate restructurings. For instance, I counseled a Lake Tahoe ski resort developer through its successful chapter 11 restructuring and the issues it faced after emerging from bankruptcy. In doing so, I closely collaborated with management on many day-to-day emergent issues, and I also represented the developer in several lawsuits and contested matters. Likewise, I represented the creditors committee of Polaroid and was intimately involved with the contentious process to sell the company's valuable assets. Show less

The formal training and mentoring I received at Jones Day provided the foundation for my legal career. At Jones Day I learned the value of contributing as a team member, as well as managing cases independently. From an early stage, I consulted with clients, examined fact and expert witnesses at multi-day trials and arbitrations, managed pretrial discovery, including document and e-discovery, prepared motions, drafted dispositive motions and appellate briefs and presented oral arguments. I also conducted intensive internal investigations of sophisticated organizations, including a bankrupt airline, a premier university athletic department and an international chemical company. Additionally, I represented debtors in chapter 11 bankruptcy cases. Among other things, I provided "on the ground" counseling to management in the tumultuous days immediately following a bankruptcy filing. Show less
