Light Projects is a design and manufacturing company of commercial light fixtures based in central London. The sectors vary from interior lighting for restaurants and art galleries such as Pizza Express and the V&A, to exterior fixtures for buildings and bridges like The Shard and Glasgow Weir. I design new products as well as further developing existing ones. I am involved in the design and manufacturing process from coming up with customer drawings, to creating manufacturing drawings for suppliers using Solidworks and even creating bill of materials plus purchase orders with Sage Manufacturing and Accounts. I also produce literature to accompany the products i.e. brochures and specification sheets, using a combination of the Adobe Creative Suit. The projects I have been a part of include: • The Scottish Parliament Gallery - we received a tender to design a bespoke fitting to light up the in-situ artwork. There were a total of 135 fittings that needed to be made. I designed the fittings, made prototypes, adjusted the design according to the customers feedback and then produced the final design, which is now installed. • 50 St. James W1U - we lit up the whole exterior facade of the building using LED strip lighting. We initially went to site and measured all of the facade to ensure the LED strips fitted accurately and the light distribution was even throughout. It is a large old building which has a lot of detail which made it an extensive task. I then had to design custom channels and brackets to fit the LED strip lights in to fit all the way around the building. Finally, we produced a labelling system and diagrams to help the contractors install the bespoke channels. Show less

I completed my degree at Loughborough University and achieved a 2:1 BSc. During my time at Loughborough I completed a range of projects that taught me how the whole design process worked. My Final Year Design Project made me draw on everything you have learnt on the course to produce an entire project, from initial research, to concept generation and development, to prototype manufacture, design for manufacture and costing. One of the team projects I was a involved with was an electro-mechanical can crusher which I did as I part of the BSc course. This tested our theoretical and practical application of both our electronic and mechanical knowledge. This course has given me a broad base of knowledge, that which has already served as a firm foundation for my career thus far. Show less

During my placement year I travelled to China to work for a toy manufacturing company who manufactured toys for European companies including Argos. It was my job to design a range of toys for them. This again was a great experience and due to the language barrier it meant my communication had to be very clear which helped greatly.
