2004-2011 - In this role I was responsible for maintaining the mammalian cell bank. Including acquiring new cell lines, replenishing existing cell lines and screening for Mycoplasma. Interacting effectively with internal and external customers was important, also responsible for distributing cells internally and globally. 1997-2004 - Formerly responsible for supplying proteins from e.coli expression system, at shake flask and fermenter scale. It was necessary to have supporting analysis skills, running gels, western blots. 1993-1997 - Environmental monitoring in a “clean room” gaining skills purifying proteins from e.coli cell pellets, taking in various purification techniques including size exclusion, ion exchange and Ni NTA chromatography, often using an AKTA explorer. This role also demanded skill in gel and western blotting technologies, protein concentration measurements, I also gained some experience in endotoxin measurements by LAL assay. Achievements - Established >1000 high quality mammalian cell banks , many of which were difficult to grow or had low starting populations. - Found and eradicated >200 cell cultures infected with Mycoplasma by agar assay, in some cases I have treated irreplaceable cell lines and cured them of infection. I have led a site-wide Mycoplasma screening service for the last 4 years to keep labs conducting cell based assays free of Mycoplasma. - Supplied >300 recombinant proteins from e.coli expression. - Purified ~50 recombinant proteins from e.coli cell pellets. - Used environmental monitoring skills to maintain “clean room” to appropriate standard.

1990 - 1993
I worked as a QC technician in the microbiology lab, responsible for environmental monitoring around clean rooms and sterile areas with manufacturing plants. Analysis of oral and sterile antibiotics from manufacturing plants. Achievements - Became familiar with environmental monitoring techniques with particular focus on water testing, air sampling, and locating bacteria by swabbing techniques. I also became experienced in sterile area gowning procedure. - Learned the principles of sterility testing of antibiotics in isolators. - Became skilled at identifying bacterial contaminants by use of gas chromatogram.
