For the fall 2016 semester I worked with Dr. Cairns, a mentor and professor of mine, to pursue understanding different ligand binding pathways. We experimented with the binding capabilities of different methoxy- and sulfonated organic compounds to tetrabutylammonium. This was done with the goal of having the tetrabutylammonium acting as a leaving group to more easily create metal complexes. For the spring of 2017 I will be working with another mentor of mine, Dr. Gitua. Currently, we are working towards extracting Artemether from Coartem 20/120 anti-malarial tablets. Success in separation will be determined using several different techniques, but including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
