Foreign Correspondent
-
Mar 1989 - Dec 2003
I joined the BBC as a graduate news trainee and worked across the range of national and regional television and radio outlets. I began my career as a foreign correspondent in 1994 in Nairobi, Kenya where I lived for 3 years covering the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, the fall of the Mobutu regime in Zaire, and the UN withdrawal from Somalia. I then moved on to Johannesburg in South Africa for another three years, covering the spread of HIV infection in southern Africa, the Mozambican floods, and the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. I finished my career as the BBC United Nations Correspondent in New York, USA and was in the city on September 11th 2001.
