I am currently working on multiple research and writing projects. These include the following: (1) A biography of Robert Grendon (1867-1949) - South African poet/journalist/politician of mixed Irish-Herero parentage. (2) A revision of my family history, Loyal Little Natal (first published 1986), in which I deal with my ancestors, the Maartens (Martens) Voortrekker family, the Laurens family from Jersey in the English Channel, the Gold and Christison family from Edzell Parish, Scotland, Jorgensen from Denmark and Maree from Ladybrand in the Orange Free State. (3) The letters of Captain Alexander RN to his wife in the early 1860s. Alexander was involved in the Cape naval station and in the suppression of the African slave trade at sea. I recently purchased the original correspondence. (4) The life of Captain Francis Grose (1731-1791), British antiquary, draughtsman, author, lexicographer (compiled dictionaries of colloquial and provincial English) and friend of the poet Robert Burns. I recently purchased thirteen original watercolour drawings by Grose as well as some of the books that he authored and illustrated on the subject of medieval remains. (5) The republication of Japanese artist Kono Bairei's three-volume collection of wood-block prints of chrysanthemums, first published in the 1890s. I recently purchased a fine original set. Elsewhere, I have also purchased twenty original watercolours of chrysanthemums by Bairei, which I intend to publish in the new edition. (6) A book on early European visitors to Korea and their impressions. (7) An Edwardian family in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. I recently purchased an intriguing collection of family snapshots (Wally Dandridge family), 1900 to 1910, and would like to publish a selection of these images with accompanying text. (8) Photographs from Beaufort West and Karoo during the South African War (1899 to 1902). (9) An English-language instructional text for young Korean students. Show less

This is the second time that I am teaching at this wonderful school. Samryong is nestled in the Moondong valley, close to Gyeryong mountain. From my classroom window, I look out on pine forests and I hear the shrill chorus of myriad cicadas. The teaching staff, students, and parents are all amazingly supportive and welcoming. Recently, at the invitation of the Gyeongnam Education Department, I lectured Korean Middle- and High-School teachers in Changwon City. I taught from OUP's excellent American Headway 3rd-level textbook. Show less

      • 1990 - 2002

In partnership with my parents, I established an antiquarian bookselling business, specializing in rare materials relating to Africa (http://christison.co.za). For several years, I managed shop premises in central Pietermaritzburg and later in a suburban shopping centre. I also acquired the stock, fittings, and goodwill of Bloomsbury Books, established by Thomas Welz in the 1970s. I established an international clientele and made several business trips to the United Kingdom during the 1990s, when I visited many provincial booksellers for the purpose of purchasing books, which I then imported into South Africa. I attended the Zimbabwe International Bookfair in Harare (1996). As a bookseller, I sold at book and antique fairs in Johannesburg and Durban. From 1999 to 2002 I worked to establish the Southern African Bookdealers Association (SABDA)—a national trade body. http://www.sabda.co.za/ Early in 2003, I left the old-book trade to enter university in England. Christison Rare books has been owned by my brother since that year. It will soon celebrate its 25th anniversary. Show less
