Dr Kannika Tan Sukantarat

I am a Clinical Psychologist at the London Clinic. I met Grainne during her time at the London Clinic. Not only she had brought a great pride with her demanding professional role as a senior nurse in the ward, but she also demanded great attention on patient care physically and psychologically. I strongly believe whatever path she takes in her professional career, this unique high standard caring quality she will always be with her.

A position here as a flight nurse was an enjoyable and challenging role. The job included seeing the patient prior to a planned flight assessing the said patient, then collecting the patient and flying the patient back to their home country following treatment in London. This position challenged the nurse to be able to work independently and the need to make confident competent decisions for the patient’s care. Flying mainly to the Middle East it also gave an insight to the culture of the Arab patient. Show less

Following a move from Ireland to London, Grainne’s initial job was as a staff nurse on an acute colorectal hepatobillary and gastroenterology ward. It opened her eyes to the world of private healthcare after coming from public healthcare in Ireland. Throughout the thirteen months that were spent there Grainne saw many changes including the shift into general medicine that brought with it its own challenges and this was taken as educational opportunity to learn more about the world of medicine vs surgical care. Working with the top consultants in their field, this employment was very difficult to leave and was only done so following the decision to travel for three months. Show less

Following internship and achieving an honours degree in nursing Grainne was one of fifteen out of sixty five nurses who obtained a post following her graduation in her training hospital. Grainne was placed on the graduate programme run in SVUH which included six months medical placement and six months surgical placement. This was the beginning of a career during which she continued her professional development becoming competent with tracheostomy care and wound care. Working on a endocrinology and general medicine ward Grainne was one of the first nurses to work on the medical observation unit which became a step down for intensive care patients receiving further treatment in non-invasive ventilation and the management of uncontrolled epilepsy and other severe medical conditions. Following the six month medical placement Grainne went to a surgical unit and at the time of commencing this placement, the surgical observation unit was opening, allowing her to assist other staff with education on how observation tools within the unit worked. Grainne also wrote an article on the working life of a nurse that was publish in SVUH in-house magazine. Show less
