I worked as a volunteer coaching rugby at The Royal High School in Edinburgh. I was actively coaching with the school for 6 years, taking a group of boys through their rugby journey from S1 (11) to U18. This allowed me to explore Long Term Athlete Development strategies and study the group watching the development of young athletes through their physical, technical, tactical and mental maturation. I was instrumental in re-establishing a strong rugby program at the school along with putting in place a sound development program affording all players at the school to fulfil their potential. The aim was to be able to design and develop a sustainable structure, which would remain in place for the short to medium term future beyond the groups time at The Royal High School. As part of the program we implemented the Sports Governing Bodies Key National Themes (now superseded) as a focus to the introduction of rugby to all S1 players along with aligning LTAD phases to develop a sound rugby program at the school, where players worked to their level of ability – whether as a talented ambitious representative player or as social player, playing for fun and the challenge Strength and power is a key component in a young rugby players development and with limited equipment and space, we worked hard to provide a minimal, but suitable S&C program for all players to aid their development. The aim was to progress this element making it a more ambitious and comprehensive part of the programme. In 2015 culminating 6 years work, we undertook a tour South Africa (Cape Town and Pretoria), where 43 players (U16 & U18 Squads) travelled to Southern Africa for a 7-match tour and cultural visit. This required strategic planning to mount a huge fund raising campaign along with more detailed planning of the day to day schedules to pack in as much as we possibly could. It was an enormous effort but provided a once in a lifetime opportunity for the group of boys and adults involved. Show less

Responsible for the overseeing of ruby development throughout the 6 communities of the East Lothian region. This included planning and implementation of rugby programs at both primary and secondary schools in the authority and linking these into the local rugby clubs to establish and strengthen the links between schools and their local community rugby club. Developing coaches to improve delivery on a local basis was key to driving the overall standards of rugby forward. This was done through structured coach education course delivery as well as working closely with local coaches during sessions and also through the local pathway rugby program for the East Lothian Falcons. As well as helping to develop coaching, the main thrust of the position was to identify and develop local talented players to aid in their individual progress through the East Lothian Falcons and on to representative rugby for the Edinburgh Region. Through this process I worked closely with all concerned parties to provide support and assistance to maximise the opportunities afforded to the players involved. Show less
