Graeme was an exceptional colleague to work with at REALPAC and had an incredible impact as our Manager of Planning & Policy. Graeme and I worked together closely on a variety of data, innovation, and advocacy projects together. What stood out most about Graeme was his problem solving skills and planning knowledge. Graeme always came up with effective and streamlined ways to convey complex research and policy files to the commercial real estate industry and senior leaders through impressive visuals, writing, and presentations. Graeme started as a policy intern with REALPAC for a summer term, and it was no surprise that he was our only intern to ever be hired full-time, and that he was quickly promoted from a coordinator to a manager. Graeme is intelligent, professional, and innovative and was an absolute pleasure to work with for the three years he was at REALPAC.

REALPAC is Canada’s senior-most Commercial Real Estate organization comprised of 125 member companies. REALPAC advocates on their behalf at all levels of government, coast to coast. As Manager, Planning & Policy I have been able to gain significant perspective by liaising with executive members of the Commercial Real Estate industry and make influential submission to government across a wide range of policy issues. My accomplishments with REALPAC so far include: Leveraged pro forma analysis and scenario modelling to apply real world underwriting criteria to proposed Inclusionary Zoning bylaws in Toronto. This better engaged stakeholders, demonstrated lack of development feasibility, and improved recommendations to government. Led innovation-oriented research initiatives into Last Mile Delivery, the Future of Malls, and Logistics & Fulfillment land uses in Mixed Use development projects to provide guidance and thought leadership to industry stakeholders. Designed and managed monthly COVID-19 impact and risk mitigation surveys for residential, industrial, office, and retail asset classes. Results were analyzed and presented to 7 different monthly REALPAC committees and emailed to 3000 individual members. Coordinated REALPAC decisionmakers, members, and industry organizations to organize advocacy initiatives, formulate policy recommendations, and draft well-researched submissions to municipal, provincial, and federal governments on emerging policy issues. This position introduced me to many of the key issues facing the Canadian commercial real estate sector. Some of these topics included housing affordability, land use planning regulation, innovative city building, real estate investment, sustainable development and taxation. In this role I assisted REALPAC’s public policy and government relations team in crafting policy submissions, white papers, research reports and other publications for consideration by senior members of government and policymakers. Over the course of my four months with REALPAC I wrote two large policy papers focusing on Rent Control and Inclusionary Zoning legislation in Ontario, prepared briefs on new rental housing policy directions in British Columbia, prepared articles regarding Calgary/Edmonton's potential to become a "Silicon Stampede" Tech City and monitored ongoing policy initiatives during both the 2018 Provincial and Municipal elections.
