I applied to this school as I wished to gain experience in a broad range of school settings during my B.Ed, and I have a great interest in the ethos of Educate Together schools. 'The Educate Together Charter describes schools that guarantee equality of access and esteem to children irrespective of their social, cultural or religious background, are learner centred in their approach to education and are run as participatory democracies, with respectful partnership between parents, pupils and staff.' (educatetogether.ie) The school has fantastic grounds and local amenities, which I intended to use in my teaching. One of my goals for this placement was to embrace the outdoors as both a location for lessons and as a resource for learning. In accordance with this, I organised a history trip to the local Mungret Abbey for my class with Mungret Heritage Society. The class delighted in the opportunity to venture out of the classroom, and immersed themselves into the history lesson. The benefits of outdoor learning and engaging with the local environment were clear as the pupils showed immense excitement for learning and successfully assimilated the information. During my time in the school, I gained experience in Special Needs Education, Aistear (Play Framework) and engagement with local history and historians. Show less

In April 2021 I completed my second Professional Placement in Scoil Íosagáin, Sexton St Limerick. I taught a class of 17 boys, covering all curricular subjects including English, Irish, Maths, SESE, Physical Education, Arts, and SPHE. Scoil Íosagáin is a DEIS primary school; part of a government programme to Deliver Excellence of Opportunity in Schools. 'The department’s vision for education [is] to more fully become a proven pathway to better opportunities for those in communities at risk of disadvantage and social exclusion.' (gov.ie) Teaching in a DEIS school was one of my main goals during my degree. I can say with certainty that I learned invaluable skills in interpersonal communication, both between teachers and between teacher and student, as well as in innovation and pedagogy. To encourage deep and meaningful learning, I used a thematic approach, with themes such as the Vikings and water, to create an engaging cross-curricular learning experience. I have attached images that I feel represent my teaching philosophy. I wish for pupils to be able to experiment, engage in kinaesthetic learning and visual art, among other methodologies. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching my class during this placement, and I am proud of the interesting projects and lessons we engaged in. Show less
