The Dwelling Place is a Christian ministry that provides transitional housing and trauma informed programs to survivors of domestic violence.Volunteers play in integral role in the life of any nonprofit, and the process of providing an organization with useful volunteer positions while fulfilling the expectations and desires of those who volunteer can be a balancing act. As The Dwelling Place Volunteer Coordinator I've had the privilege of working with over over 100 volunteers each year; screening volunteer applications, offering bi-monthly training sessions and matching volunteers to our (approximately) 25 weekly volunteer opportunities. I've been encouraged to play a role in increased volunteer stability as well as the implementation of trauma informed processes such as more rigorous training and background check policies for all volunteers that enter our safe housing facility.

The Dwelling Place is a Christian ministry that provides transitional housing and trauma informed programs to survivors of domestic violence. Any program working with survivors of domestic violence will feel the tension of providing clear expectations while fostering a culture of empowerment and choice. I've come to believe the two (expectations and empowerment) are not contradictory but rather complimentary. Clear expectations create the firm foundation for empowerment and choice. As the 30 Day Program Manager, I worked with all new residents entering The Dwelling Place program. My primary duty was to be a resident's touch point during this time of transition, and on-board all of our new residents well before they continued formally in our long-term program. I wrote the First 30-Day Curriculum, and had the joy of facilitating that curriculum to groups newcomers ranging in group size of 2 to 6 adult women. The Dwelling Place's First 30 Day Curriculum allows for repetition of our program process and eligibility requirements so that residents can feel knowledgeable and invested in the program. These clear expectations and the implementation of a more intentional on boarding process resulted in longer-term stays at The Dwelling Place, and an increase in successful move outs. I loved watching the camaraderie that builds by a group learning together for an entire month, but my favorite part of this position was sitting down one on one with new residents and with the firm foundation of clear expectations under our feet, getting to cast a vision for what they'd like to accomplish in the next year, "planning backwards" with them the steps it will take to achieve their goals.

    • Case Manager
      • Jun 2016 - Oct 2017

The Dwelling Place is a Christian ministry that provides transitional housing and trauma informed programs to survivors of domestic violence. As a case manager, I worked in-home and one on one with survivors and their families. My primary duty was to work alongside the residents on my caseload, utilizing motivational interviewing to create goals and monthly care plans, provide advocacy and accountability and track progress and outcomes. My favorite part of this position was the collaboration that takes place with the survivor to think holistically about their health and goals, and the collaboration that takes place between myself and county advocates, therapists, and children advocates to understand this family as a system instead of individual parts to provide the best care possible.

    • Intern/Program Assistant
      • Sep 2015 - Jun 2016

The Dwelling Place is a Christian ministry that provides transitional housing and trauma informed programs to survivors of domestic violence. As an intern, and then a full-time Program Assistant, I gained valuable insight into the inner workings of a non-profit. I came alongside residents in The Dwelling Place program to take tangible steps towards their goals providing rides, encouragement, childcare and sometimes even help with chores. My favorite part of this position was the opportunity I had to learn from not only staff, but our resident population. This opportunity to have little administrative responsibility and a high amount of relational opportunities equipped me with understanding and compassion for the roles that I later stepped into at The Dwelling Place.
