Griffith University values the contribution of its student leaders – they are significant and valued members of our campus communities. Glenn Chandler participated as a Student Mentor for Griffith Engineering Mentoring Program (GC) in 2017. The Student Mentor role is an important student leadership role within the Griffith community as they support the transition of commencing students to the university environment. In this role Glenn demonstrated a willingness to assist and motivate others, and share their knowledge with great enthusiasm. Glenn was provided with training and opportunities to build upon his communication skills, leadership skills, active listening skills, diversity awareness, relationship building skills, and through this has developed his confidence and leadership.

Substation 33 is a ’social-enterprise’ that works with the community on various projects including, work-for-the-dole programs, e-waste recycling, flooded-road signs, remote sensors and monitoring equipment as well as 3D printers. Supervised by the head of innovations, Simon Schmidtke, a low cost, simple to build 3D printer is designed for late-primary and older school students to be able to build and maintain themselves to learn about mechanical and electronic engineering principles and to stimulate their imagination for what can be done with technology. This 3D printer uses some recycled parts from the e-waste program, such as stepper motors, plastics, wiring and acrylic to highlight the benefits of usefulness of recycling. As lead designer, it is important to maintain version control during the iterative design process so it can be followed by new members to the organisation and to teach these new members design techniques so they can learn new skills. Developing this 3D printer has facilitated learning new skills, including 3D design as well as electronics and PCB design. Show less
