International SOS is a worldwide healthcare, medical assistance and security service company. My primary role was emergency health care for offshore personnel on oil rigs in various international locations including Indonesia & the African Congo State. I did several rotations in PNG as a medic to Exxon Mobil in remote areas, supporting research teams. Another project was providing medical support for Milsearch, a UXO/de-mining company, clearing military ordinance outside Port Moresby for the initial stage of LNG production. While there, I had the opportunity to work with expat doctors and snake specialists, as well as utilizing the opportunity for involvement with the local hospital. A wealth of specialized knowledge and experience was gained from local experts, while working with limited resources in challenging environments.; Teaching Basic Life Support and Senior First Aid to members of the public was my secondary occupation between overseas contracts with International SOS. Having gained my Cert IV in Training and Assessment in 2008 St John's was an excellent forum for gaining experience training lay-personnel as well as professional staff. Show less

Initially, I joined St John Ambulance Service, Northern Territory contracted to a FIFO position to work at a project outside a remote indigenous town called Wadeye, providing medical support to a mining community. Within this role I provided emergency response, not only to site personnel but also the local community. This also presented the opportunity to attend the only local medical centre and contribute to clinical case reviews. This provided me with valuable insight to the indigenous culture and their specific health issues. During the contract, I was seconded to back Darwin where I continued to work 'on road' as an ICP until my contract was completed. I am still employed on a casual basis and continue to return annually to maintain my on road experience. ASPEN MEDICAL (AU); Paramedic .Honiara, Solomon Islands; Paramedic Dili, East Timor Aspen Medical was contracted by the Australian Government to be part of the Regional Assistance Mission in the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). Called operation Helpem Fren and working with an international team of doctors, paramedics and nurses we provided primary care and emergency response to the Australian & New Zealand Army, Federal Police and Australian government officials based in Honiara and the surrounding islands. RAMSI was an incredible experience and after a 3 month rotation and a short return to Queensland, I completed a further 3 months in East Timor as part of the set up team for operation Astute based in Dili. We re-created the same facility and service as had been achieved in the Solomon Islands. Working with security teams as our escort, we provided emergency road response throughout the troubled region. As a flight paramedic, helicopter response and night operations were a regular part of my duties during this time. Show less

In January 2006 I accepted position of paramedic with QAS providing emergency pre-hospital response around the Gold Coast region of Queensland. Based primarily in Beenleigh, just outside Brisbane, the diverse region gave ample opportunities to practice my skills and embrace the culture. After a probationary period I made the career decision to go from full time to casual to gain a more diverse clinical exposure from overseas opportunities especially in the area of aeromedical retrieval and humanitarian aid . I practiced as a State Registered Paramedic, providing pre-hospital services throughout the Peterborough, Cambridge and Norfolk region - locations that are a cultural oasis of local and foreign communities. The surrounding networks of motorways and country roads enhanced my advanced driving skills, as well as trauma response. My duties also included being a single responder. By the end of my time with the service I had become a successful mentor to paramedics in training, and was part of the chemical, biological and nuclear response team. I participated in a clinical trial aiming to improve the outcome of patients suffering MI, by interpreting 12 lead ECG, administering thrombolytic agents and fast-track admission to CCU. Show less

The requirements of practice in a paramedic role on private ambulances are regulated by the Melbourne Ambulance Service (MAS). My Paramedic qualifications were assessed through Monash University and equivalency there after approved. The transport position for compass was an interim between services after an interstate move and was interesting from the inherent physiological complications of spinal damage and recovery of which I rarely get to see. Joining LAS in 1989, I commenced by working on the Patient Transport Services, taking patients to/from hospital appointments. Having completed a minimum of 18/12 of PTS, I was able to apply for a transfer to the emergency division. I completed the “Miller Certificate” enabling this transition, and later obtained my Paramedic Certification. London gave me a 'baptism of fire' providing the foundation for my chosen career path, and provided opportunities for training not normally available to ambulance personnel (eg: Paediatric Cannulation, midwifery 'hands-on”, Hyperbaric Medicine).
