mHS's vision is to bridge the gap by offering access to user-friendly and socio-culturally adequate engineering knowledge, customised building manuals and financial planning tools, via digital technology - the app NEEV. Whoever knows me also knows that I've been fighting this battle for a while. I'm now excited and thrilled to have joined City Lab, an internationally awarded NGO, created and supported by amazing persons, that is aiming high to try and change the world - safe house after safe house.

IBO has a long history of humanitarian dedication and is involved in various projects across the globe, always in support of the most vulnerable people. I'm currently working on the "No One Left Behind" programme in Tanzania, whose aim is to increase the social inclusion of disabled people and strengthen the public services that the local Government offers. Within this project we have (i) built a dormitory for 80 children with disability, (ii) enhanced the accessibility of 10 existing schools through several new ramps and rainfall runoff management systems, (iii) built accessible WASH facilities in 6 schools, including septic tanks, water riser and sinks. My support has been both from remote and on the field, and included: architectural and structural design, design management, tender, writing of the contract documents, project management and construction monitoring.

In 2015 two major Earthquakes devasted Nepal, affecting 950,000 dwellings, damaging infrastructure and destroying communities across 14 districts. The Government of India funded the Nepal Housing Reconstruction Project in Gorkha, which is implemented by UNDP and coordinated by the National Reconstruction Authority of Nepal. To effectively deliver high quality facilitation services to circa 27,000 households in Gorkha, UNDP has partnered with the Owner Driven Reconstruction Collaborative: a network of registered institutions in India, expert on reconstruction via a holistic social-technical approach. Between February and March 2020, I was based in the District Office of Gorkha municipality, providing technical support on the Nepal Housing Reconstruction Project. Thanks to my background, I collaborated with the Senior Engineers and Social Workers with regards to retrofitting and construction techniques, seismic details, Quality Assurance and social inclusion. I visited various sites (e.g. local masons trainings, landless people houses, retrofitting and reconstruction sites) and attended to several meetings (e.g. Disaster Risk Reduction meeting, monthly meeting at rural municipality, building permits meeting). Part of my assignment was also to provide a report focused on the importance of the social-technical approach: analysis and way forward. This document is addressed to the funders (GOI) and describes the accomplishments of the NHRP in Gorkha, its tools and methodologies. Some observations on potential developments have also been included; such as alternative traditional construction materials, alternative seismic strenghtening techniques, sustainability, waste management, climate change, human trafficking and use of Technology in DRR.

During January 2020 I took some time to volunteer for some causes which are close to my heart. AHAH is a reliable and trustworthy American NGO, that works in the Disaster Response industry with an "arrive early - leave late" approach. In Nepal we have built three new schools in the Marin rural municipality, using a proper seismic design and getting the local population involved. My return to Project Management could not be any better. I was Engineer to the Contract Rep. for the Sky Stadium Upgrade: closing Stage 1, the Facade Upgrade, and commencing Stage 2, the Concourse Upgrade, for a total value of NZD 10-15M. Large portions of the facade have been replaced with glazing, whereas the concourse is being renovated including new Food & Beverage outlets, feature lights, signage, flooring and a heritage walk to celebrate Wellington's culture and Sport Legends. I managed this project in a very delicate moment: between the conclusion of the Contract with the Facade Contractor and the start of the works on the Concourse, including the Tender and the Contract documents for Stage 2. If for the Stadium Upgrade I took care of the first and last stage of a project (Design Management and Procurement on one end and Practical Completion, Defects Liability, Final Account on the other end), for the Rimutaka Prison New Modular Build project I covered the construction phase, enhancing my skills on Contract and Construction Management. This remarkable project was part of nationwide Programme, which involved Public funding. It was subdivided in different Separable Portions, whose approvals and development had to be individually addressed, ensuring an harmonious progress on Site. The Prison, as the Stadium, was a live environment; in this case with unique and special Security and Operational requirements. In addition to these two major projects, I managed a number of Seismic Strenghenings and fit-outs for ANZ, BNZ and ASB Banks. These experiences allowed me to take a project from concept to completion, understanding Banks' special requirements, liaising and motivating all the stakeholders. RCP is the largest independent project management company in New Zealand, the size and quality of their projects are incomparable. I look forward to the application of my new skills to all my next endeavours.

After one year at Silvester Clark, I wanted to get involved again in projects in developing countries, which is my passion since my thesis in Peru on seismic strenghtening of non-engineered constructions. Hence my choice to move to Miyamoto; they are experts in risk mitigation and post-disaster reconstruction, they also run a non-profit (Miyamoto Relief) side by side to the main Company. I was regularly collaborating with our offices in the US and in Nepal, especially for the writing of the new seismic guidelines of Healthcare Buildings for the Nepalese Government. In this occasion I also had the chance to work closely with Mr Jitendra Bothara, a fine Engineer very competent on non-engineered constructions. Another very interesting part of my working life was the collaboration with AIG, Southern Response and the Earthquake Commision regarding the assessment of damaged buildings, the identification of earthquake related damage and remediation strategy after 2010 Canterbury and 2016 Kaikoura Earthquakes. This experience deepen my knowledge on seismic damage and how the Insurances' world works. I was also responsible for the new seismic design and construction monitoring of Christ's College and Wairakei School, together with a Detailed Seismic Assessment and Seismic Restraints' peer review of Countdown Supermarket in Palmerston North. I also became familiar with fee proposals and internal Project Management. Miyamoto International is a global earthquake structural engineering and project management company providing critical services that sustain industries and safeguard communities around the world. Experts in delivering earthquake structural engineering and high-performance engineering that reduce lifecycle costs and produce a positive net impact on a structure’s operation.

After almost 2 years in Africa, I decided to return to my specialisation in Seismic Engineering and moved to New Zealand. Silvester Clark gave me the opportunity to work on interesting and challenging projects right from the beginning. Following the new approach of Low Damage, I designed the Seismic Restraints for the new ASB Hospital in Christchurch. The aim was to ensure that the Hospital would remain fully functioning after extreme seismic events. As Seismic Consultant, I was regularly flying to Christchurch to liaise with the main and the sub-contractors (CPB et al) and the other consultants to coordinate the design and monitor the construction. We were the pioneers of this branch of Seismic Engineering, referring to cutting-edge researches and standards from around the world and leading the way on Non-Structural Seismic Strenghtening using BIM technology. Wellington is built on a fault line that crosses the middle of the city, thus I also specialised in Seismic Inital Evaluation Procedures, Detailed Seismic Assessments and Strengthenings. Immediately after the 7.8 Mw Kaikoura Earthquake that hit on the night of 13/11/2016, I carried out initial Seismic Assessments to ensure that no immediate action was required and the building could be safely occupied. Many buildings were heavily damaged and in some cases, such as the Statistics House, it had to be completely demolished. It had been an hectic and emotionally challenging period, but it was thrilling and an enormous resposibility to be part of the Response and Recovery Structural Team. Always under seismic engineering but as new builds, I also designed a new Retirement Village in steel, concrete and timber in Kerikeri. While, as consultant in a dispute between another firm and Engineers NZ , I carried out a Pushover Analysis using Etabs (FEM modeling) to determine the ductility of the Nokia Building in Wellington.

I then decided to go overseas and work between Chad and Italy. I was involved in remarkable projects in the public and private sector, such as the Presidential Residence and the Grand Hotel and Meeting Centre (now Radisson Bleu) in N’Djamena (total value +100M euros). In this period I learnt the fundamentals of Project Management, Design Management, Procurement, Contract Management, Construction Management, Risks Management and Project Delivery. I was collaborating with European cutting edge Contractors as Vinci Group (Satom) and CFE, while working also as Structural Engineer Consultant on smaller Residential Buildings. I also learnt new languages, since in Chad they speak Arabic but it's a former French colony; hence, the use of French in the working environment. Luckily for me, a good emotional intelligence is as important as having solid communication skills. Being a white, foreign, young, woman Engineer working in Chad, I had to overcome various unconventional challenges; this experience has definitely shaped my character. I truly enjoyed my time there and in the future I would welcome a similar experience in a developing country. TAU offer public and private clients a complete range of services including planning, feasibility studies, design and procurement, as well as program, project, and construction management.
