I built this resort with my partner from a barren sand dune to an upscale hotel that is now a thriving success. We had a dream and made it into a reality over years of hard work, hard knocks, and quite a lot of educating ourselves “on the fly.” It has made me extremely flexible, resourceful and I’ve gained valuable life experience as well as numerous skills including, but not limited to: CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT: I personally designed the buildings, created mockups by learning architectural design programs, created cost projections and oversaw the construction of the buildings. COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RESOURCES: I learned Portuguese and how diverse employees including Africans and Europeans. I handled scheduling, contracting, hiring/firing, paying salaries and many other human resources responsibilities. HOTEL & RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT: I can manage online booking sites individually, through channel managers or through a hotel management program. I ran the restaurant simply at first and then made the transition to using a POS program so I am well versed in setting them up and implementing them. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT: I can work as part of a team as well as maintain a role as a leader. I have worked as a woman in a country that favors men and I have gained respect through my positive attitude and by proving my abilities through actions and not orders. ACCOUNTING: I have done the accounts for the company using Quickbooks as well as setting up Point-of-Sale programs for the restaurant. I also have managed to train less educated African staff members on how to keep records straight. Lastly, I wrote annual reports and balance sheets for our investor. WEB DESIGN & MARKETING: I designed our website as well as all of our promotional videos. I maintain our social media accounts and have taken 90% of the photos for the lodge. As the former principal of the International School of Pemba (ISP), I was asked to return to the school to assist with the development and implementation of new policies. The school had recently accepted 60+ Mozambican students who did not speak English. As ISP is a Cambridge school, these students quickly dropped the level of education in all classes. To solve this problem, I developed an ESL program as well as creating placement tests and school policies that would assist the teachers in handling such extreme multi-level classes. I remained for one year to supervise the implementation of these programs and policies but was able to terminate my contract again when the programs proved successful. During this year, I also performed teacher trainings as well as class monitoring and teaching evaluations. Show less

Worked with the local community to develop sustainable projects. One project was the development of a tourist camp which is what started my passion for project development and hospitality. I assisted in project development, grant writing, and fundraising. I oversaw the construction of the camp and helped with the logistics of transporting materials into the desert. Once the project was running, I simplified operations and trained local Namibians in hospitality, general management and customer service. Once we got it running as smoothly as possible, I assisted in targeting clients. We solved the problem of the low season by offering the camp as a group spot for school holiday trips. It was successful and still running 5 years after I left Namibia. Show less
