The goal of my latest project was to develop a deep learning pipeline for the automatic and explainable-by-design classification of mammogram images. The clinical question is the prediction of malignancy of breast masses, i.e., to be able to differentiate between malignant and benign masses without resorting to an invasive biopsy, which today is the gold standard. The project is written in Python and uses Convolutional Neural Networks, both from scratch and the literature, and the ProtoPNet architecture. Several libraries are used such as PyTorch, Torchvision, Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, Sklearn, cudnn. I used Slurm workload manager for cluster computing. At the moment, I am working on a systematic review of the state-of-the-art at the intersection of Explainable Artificial Intelligence and Causality. Among the planned, upcoming projects, I will work on brain MR images of Alzheimer's cases and cognitively normal cases,. This is to develop a causally-explainable deep learning tool for the prediction of AD way before symptoms occur. Along with this work, I am involved in research collaboration with national and international partners, for example, physicians in Pisa, Siena and Florence, computer engineers in Greece, etc. In addition, I am involved in the research program Proteomics, RAdiomics & Machine learning-integrated strategy for precision medicine for Alzheimer's. I carry out this activity at the Signals & Images Lab of the Institute of Information Science and Technology, the largest computer science institute of Italy's Research Council, located in the Research Area of Pisa.

Research activities at the Radiation Research Unit and the Division of Radiotherapy of the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, in relation to my master thesis project entitled "Study and development of advanced models integrating imaging and clinical features for outcome prediction in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated for brain metastases with stereotactic radiotherapy". The complete thesis in PDF format will be freely available soon at: https://etd.adm.unipi.it/theses/available/etd-06252021-173635/

Master's Degree Thesis project
-
Dec 2020 - Mar 2021
Radiomics in Brain MR Imaging for Oncology. The thesis work, developed in collaboration with IEO - European Institute of Oncology - in Milan, aims to explore the applications of Radiomics and Machine Learning techniques to cerebral MR images for the characterization of NSCLC patients. I'm living the opportunity to gain knowledge of radiomic softwares, get experience with python programming and refine research on medical images analysis. Unfortunately, the covid-19 pandemic forced me to carry out the project remotely for months, but I then found the opportunity to conclude my experience in presence with an internship at the Institute.

Tutoring and didactic-integrative, preparatory and recovery activities: Linear Algebra and Mathematical Analysis 2 - Biomedical Engineering - Academic Year 2019/2020. I collaborated with Professor during the summer and winter exams. In particular, I managed the arrangement of students during the exam by dividing them into classrooms, spacing them, providing them with the sheets with the exam text and explaining the test requirements. During the course, I kept control of both the timetable and the silence among the students. At the end, I recovered all the tasks and wrote the solutions on the blackboard, visible to all bystanders, with the responsibility of determining the candidates who had passed the written test and could therefore access the oral one with the Professor.
