I offer this recommendation and reference for Georgie Mikus, a teacher at the Kunawarritji campus of Rawa Community School. During the 4th term of 2018, I completed an art residency (filmmaking and storytelling) at the Rawa Community School campuses at Punmu in the Great Sandy Desert and Kunawarritji in the Gibson Desert. My residency at Kunawarritji involved storytelling and filmmaking with 17 keen and hardworking students, aged from pre-primary through to 18. The students were eager to learn and make art - lots of it. The culture at Kunawarritji campus is one that encourages the students to have fun as they learn, while still maintaining an excellent level of focus and discipline. The young people are keen to be at school and are very proud of their school environment. By way of example of that pride in place, the students who were involved in making a short documentary about their school and community stopped filming on a number of occasions to ensure the areas they were filming were tidy and free of any litter. They did that on their own intiative. Georgie Mikus has developed a marvelous bond with her students. She engages and encourages them individually and as a group in ways that build their self confidence and creativity. Any drifts towards less appropriate behaviours are dealt with very effectively in ways that maintain self respect and responsibility. Georgie effortlessly dovetailed our art residency into her program and supported what we were doing with supplementary work that kept the student group energised and focussed. Their creative participation and high volume output bear testimony to Georgie's professionalism and leadership. Georgie Mikus was a joy to work with and I am pleased to offer her this recommendation.

Head of Campus

Managing the day to day running of one of the remotest campuses in Australia, located on Martu Land in the far east Pilbara. Supported by community members to initiate a range of educational programs. The success of these programs and initiatives is a testament to the students’ and the community. I am extremely proud of the introduction of an on-country learning program which focussed on two-way learning whilst also being cross-disciplinary, the Martu Language Program to introduce Martu Wangka to the classroom, Healthy Eating and Nutrition Program, Learning journeys to involve communities in students’ learning, overnight camping trips to extend the students’ learning goals, development of ‘Parngka Awards’ to acknowledge effort and achievement relevant to students’ personalised goals, development of Behavioural Management program, individualised maths progress tracking document to ensure progress of students’, development of ethos including the school’s values, Scitech Weather Wall Program and introduction of required documentation including parent consent forms and IT agreements. The acceleration of academic progression and high attendance obtained by the students’ while at Rawa has been my most revered achievement in my educational career. Show less
