Student Support Worker

Mar 2020 - Jan 2021
I assisted students at a university campus who required extra assistance. As I have been working one-on-one with people, strong communication skills, a friendly and approachable personality and patience were paramount for this role. Confidentiality and keeping the nature of my work disclosed was essential; this position required obtaining personal and private information about students which cannot be revealed to anyone else, thus I have needed to develop trust between students and myself. Recruitment Ambassador
-
Feb 2019 - Jan 2020
Elements of this Ambassador position and my Student Ambassador role were very similar; this role also required working at on-campus recruitment events, carrying out tasks including campus-tours and registering guests. However, as this job had a larger emphasis on public-speaking and leadership, a new task I was assigned was delivering a half-hour talk to audiences which centred around student experiences at university. This public-speaking element of the role was carried forward to other shifts - my university organised workshops which school students were invited to attend, so they could learn more about what university is and higher education routes in general. At these workshops I would also deliver talks similar to the Student Life presentation, assist with the running of workshop activities and engage with the students whilst they were working on such activities.Away from campus, as a Recruitment Ambassador I also travelled to schools and colleges where I was representing the university. I would either deliver talks to the students there, or attend a university fayre and be on hand to answer any questions students had about the courses there etc.Akin to the other Ambassador positions I worked in, efficient customer-service, working under pressure and on the spot, and multitasking were key assets for this role. I also developed confidence when delivering a speech to a significant audience, something I did regularly without the use of a script.

Student Ambassador
-
Sep 2018 - Jan 2020
As a Student Ambassador I worked at numerous recruitment events on-campus, designed to introduce the campus to people for the first time, and encourage them to subsequently apply to study at the university. Tasks I was asked to do at such events included registering guests, answering any questions they had about the university and student life, directing guests, and leading campus tours. Such tours were led by one Ambassador and for these I needed to learn and remember knowledge about all the buildings on campus. There was a variety of other shifts outside of the recruitment events; I also acted as an usher at Graduation Ceremonies, and assisted with a number of administration tasks including data-inputting, call-centre shifts, and creating and printing off signage for recruitment events. I regularly helped to set-up and pack-down any events which happened on campus too. This role helped me to develop skills including the provision customer-service in person and on the phone, dealing with enquires both on the spot and when under pressure (live recruitment events did not always run smoothly), multitasking, and working as a team and independently.

Sessional Enrolment Assistant
-
Aug 2018 - Sep 2018
For six weeks, I had a temporary full-time contract to work at a college, to assist them with their busiest period of enrolment. I was trained to complete a number of complex enrolment procedures, as the enrolment process differed depending on the age and type of students. In-between enrolments, I also completed a number of admin duties – filing and rearranging old documentation, filing in databases, and ringing up parents and guardians to gather information for the database collection.I found this job opportunity a really useful experience to become accustomed to working a full-time job, and as such it helped me improve my time management skills both within the position itself, but also in my personal life out of work. This was also the job role where I carried out many administrative tasks for the first time.

Student Researcher
-
May 2018 - Aug 2018
I was chosen to carry out paid research for the Student Union at the University of Lincoln, only one of five students selected. We were part of a wider project looking into student engagement for academic-orientated activities the Student Union had organised; the Union wanted to find out if they needed to change the running of the Academic Schemes in the next academic year, if participation and engagement was low from certain groups of students. The Union gave us the opportunity to select a specific group of students to focus our research on, thus I selected commuting students. I picked them because I had been a commuting student myself, and felt unable to participate at all times. I created and distributed my own survey, analysed my data and included it into a fully written-up report, and eventually presented it in front of an audience including the Vice-Chancellor of the University. My findings were also part of an article on the project published in an education academic journal. This was the first time I had coordinated my own research project with full creative control and virtually no supervision. I completed complex data analysis on my own using SPSS, and put the skills into action which I had learned during my undergraduate degree.

School Ambassador for School of Psychology
-
Dec 2015 - Mar 2018
As a School Ambassador, I would assist the Psychology department at my university at their Open Days, touring guests around the Psychology classrooms and labs. After I had been in the position for a couple of years, I advanced further in the role and demonstrated one piece of equipment from the labs to visitors on the Open Day. As I was, by the final year of my undergraduate degree, one of the most experienced School Ambassadors, my supervisor trusted me with helping to train newer Ambassadors, and with demoing an experience and important piece of research equipment.

Teaching Assistant
-
May 2017 - Aug 2017
I was part of an organisation which travelled around primary schools in Lincolnshire, to run after-school clubs which taught Maths. The aim of the club was to teach basic Maths skills in a fun, unique and interactive way which young children would enjoy and learn from. I would assist with the running of the activities alongside the person leading the teaching, through distributing the workshop materials, and talking to the students and helping them whilst they were doing their workshop activities. Some of the activities involved props and dressing up in costumes - this ‘acting’ required much confidence and the removal of feelings and thoughts like doubt; this and working with young children were the new skills I picked up whilst I was employed in this role.

Home-Learning Club Assistant
-
Sep 2014 - Mar 2015
Whilst I was studying at Sixth-Form, I obtained a part-time job at my school. I assisted an after school home-learning club, which students between Years 7 and 11 attended in order to get their classwork done. These students tended to have behavioural issues and / or struggled to focus, so they were at the club because they needed to be, and not because they voluntarily decided to attend. Therefore, my role was to assist them if they were particularly struggling with an assignment, whilst monitoring their behaviour and making sure they stayed focus on completing their work. This was my first ever job.
