    • Placement Student
      • Jan 2022 - Jul 2022

I am currently on my second placement with the University of Plymouth and Clare Embling, where I am analysing Hydroacoustic data collected by the Jupiter Foundation in Hawaii through use of their autonomous vessel specifically focussing on minke and humpback whales. Working in partnership with the Mayflower Autonomous Ship throughout my placement. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) is a grass roots initiative led by marine research non-profit ProMare with support from IBM and a global consortium of partners. Working in tandem with oceanographers and other vessels, MAS provides a flexible, cost-effective and safe option for gathering critical data about the ocean. It can spend long durations at sea, carrying scientific equipment and making its own decisions about how to optimize its route and mission. My placement also provided me with the opportunity to attend a glider deployment onboard the University of Plymouth’s boat Wave Dancer in local waters. The SLOCUM autonomous underwater vessel was towing a Seiche digital hydrophone and we were lucky enough to watch the process of this technology deployment and all the work that goes in to allowing for such a venture. I also got the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Marine Vertebrates Research Group marine mammal and seabird survey onboard Take The Helm around the coastline of Cornwall. Show less

      • Jun 2022 - Jun 2022

I was lucky enough to spend five days at sea onboard Take The Helm, a fantastic 45-foot long yacht owned by the University that was used throughout the summer to collect data and contribute towards a growing database about marine mammals in our local waters. Data collected by students at the University of Plymouth contributes to long-term monitoring and conservation of marine mammal and seabird populations in the southwest UK. We know very little about the populations here off the south coast of the UK, yet it is has a high level of bycatch (where marine mammals are caught or entangled in fishing nets) resulting in the injury and deaths of many animals. It is therefore critical to understand where and when marine mammals are found so we can best conserve them. The Take the Helm surveys contribute to this knowledge and also form the basis of a range of dissertation and masters projects. Students can analyse the data they collect and contribute to their local conservation. I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to get involved with such a great opportunity and learnt a great deal throughout my time onboard Take The Helm! Show less

During the summer of 2018 I spent a week doing work experience at the Marine Biological Association. This allowed me to explore elements of molecular lab work and assist with the Yealm BioBlitz event. This yearly event consists of 24-hours of activities which aims to get local school and community groups involved to better understand the incredible range of habitats in the locality. Whilst carrying out this week I also participated in larval fish gut analysis and seine netting to collect research for ongoing surveys. We also did oyster surveys to monitor invasive species. I also used PCR to screen for mutants of the diatom Phaeodactylum Tricornutum (p. tri) which gave me more understanding microbiology and both cellular and molecular lab work. Show less

In February 2018 I was lucky enough to receive work experience at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth as a Learning and Education Host. It was truly fascinating to work with such a wide range of aquatic species and I learnt so much from the staff there. I particularly enjoyed the conservation work the aquarium carried out daily and the range of informative talks they gave each day. I helped to talk to the public in various zones around the aquarium and spent time working in our Cephalopod room where I educated people of all ages. In July 2017 I did a two-week internship in the aquatics section at Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary. I did a lot of food preparation for species such as Asian Short Clawed Otters, Common and Grey Seals, and even a Green Sea Turtle. It was interesting to see the wide range of diets and to learn more about the nutritional value of each food. I also did husbandry tasks and worked in the Rainforest and Rockpool zones interacting with the public. I spent time specifically with the Penguins cleaning their enclosure and preparing their feed. Working at Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary opened my eyes to the rescue and rehabilitation of Seals along our coast. This encouraged me to seek further training by completing the BDMLR marine mammal medic course so that I can assist with rescues whenever necessary. Show less
