Working as a part of the project team, I assisted in supporting people with disabilities to participate and enjoy the tournament. This meant working with liaisons and managers to ensure that the needs of the team and players were being met. This included ensuring players' sensory and physical needs were being met while at the tournament, and assisting with accommodation to ensure that the environment was inclusive and practical. I ensured that information and advice was available to teams which reflected a service that was inclusive and respectful while always supporting the needs of the individual. I advocated for the disability sector in the community while encouraging participation and support from outside services. I worked closely with sponsors and community service providers to promote inclusivity and respond to adversity. I used effective interpersonal skills and worked well within the team. Show less

I was interim team leader in the toddler classroom. Working closely with families, I was able to directly support and advocate for the children in the class with developmental and physical disabilities. This meant pushing for early intervention to be recognised as an important tool in preparing families and allowing for a greater transition to school. Working closely with services for the blind, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and other supports, I was able to create a classroom that reflected the needs of the children in the center. This was not always an easy task but through perseverance and education, we were able to get to a place that supports the learning of the individual. Working with government agencies to ensure that we are working with up to date information and policies around safeguarding, the special education sector, and relevant agencies that are there to support children in need. Recognising that the environment needs to reflect the sensory needs of the children, I was able to take steps to ensure that children were able to remain at the center for the day, meeting their emotional needs. Working with varied abilities, I created an environment that was inclusive of the needs and interests of the class. Creating IEP’s daily in conjunction with families and outside supports, reflected the learning pathways and goals of individual children. This needed strong written and verbal communication skills to ensure that I was making the relevant information available and easy to understand. I taught through an adapted curriculum while creating a routine and class schedule that had focussed on the needs of each student, we focused on overcoming adversity, social and interpersonal skills and taught through an interest based approach to ensure the learning was relevant to the student. Being trained in safe crisis management, I was able to role model positive behavior techniques to my support staff while displaying tact and patience. Advocating for my students within the community was important in creating an environment that was inclusive, respectful and adaptable to the needs of all. This involved being a part of local initiatives to promote an inclusive environment while being a part of and aware of policies and procedures that affect the special education sector. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team allowed me to ensure that I was best meeting the needs of the student reflected in all environments. Show less

Continuous care for quadriplegic client with spinal injury. While supporting my client, respect and empathy underpinned everything I did. I transported my client to medical appointments to ensure that her needs were being met and progress was always being made. I encouraged and supported social interaction to ensure mental health and well being was being supported. I was solely responsible for monitoring vital signs and medication use while documenting variances and concerning responses. This included administering medication according to strict schedules as well as recording patrinet temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
