Over a 6 week period, I completed part of my university placement at Making Strides in order to accumulate my ESSA accreditation hours. Working full time, Monday - Friday, I assisted, observed and conducted my own exercise prescription, under supervision, for neurological conditions. I learnt about a variety of neurological conditions, including spinal cord injuries, stroke, traumatic brain injuries and unknown neurological disease. I am now more confident to prescribe exercises tailored to clients goals, bone health and cardiovascular health, consider safety precautions in the exercise set up to avoid pressure sore, postural hypotension, etc, and more conscious of recognising different signs and symptoms common in neurological conditions. I was exposed to a variety of training modalities including FES, gait training, strength training, balance training and bone loading.

I work with a range of clients who differ in their goals and special considerations. Goals vary between improving performance to losing weight to social interaction in a fun environment. I've coached clients with carpal tunnel, knee osteoarthritis and muscle strains. It is a close family environment therefore I coach the same people throughout the week and those I see in group class also attend a one-on-one session with myself or employer. Class exercises and time layout follow a HITT, METCON and Strength structure. One-on-one sessions are tailored to the individual need of the client and may involved Olympic lifts or accessory work or cardio.Work ceased due to COVID.

While working here I was able to practise my social skills as well improve my improvisation and working under pressure skills due to the intense and busy atmosphere bars can have. Learnt how to communicate efficiently with co-workers as teamwork was the only way to get through the night without complications and unhappy customers. After previously approaching and meeting Jim Barrett (one of the founders for Making Strides) in orientation week, I was offered the opportunity to have a feel for the field of neural rehabilitation by experiencing one day at the centre. Learned to work in teams and under brutal weather conditions. A very physically labouring job. From half way through I was given my responsibility in leading teams for the day and eventually given a independent job. This job came with a lot of pressure and responsibility to complete jobs on my own and correctly otherwise farming customers would be unsatisfied. High school work experience - At the time I was interested in sports exercise science and coaching. I had contacts within Queensland Cricket that managed to get me a weeks experience inside the gym and see how the Bull and Heat players train for strength and conditioning.
