The leadership development programme is an academic and vocational dual role, in which I attained a Level 7 PGDE at the end of my second year and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at the end of my first. Alongside full-time teaching, I completed four 6000 word essays based on pedagogical research and real-world application to my school context. Throughout this programme, I was able to maintain academic excellence, as I achieved 89% on an essay about my educational philosophy as my rationale is rooted in both classroom practice and academia. I continue to strive for excellence in the classroom, as a result of the research-intense nature of Teach First, by overcoming educational deficits which would impact pupil attainment. For example, in the context of a school with 48.9% pupils speaking ‘English as an additional language’ (EAL) I noticed that access to subject-specific vocabulary prevented engagement with the curriculum. Therefore, I implemented research-informed interventions (such as Talk for Writing) to develop resilient pupils who learnt to apply tier one vocabulary in the appropriate context. In addition, as a mentor to other Teach First trainees in my previous school, I developed leadership qualities beyond the classroom. By offering moral support and developmental observations, I was able to refine my mentoring qualities.

Whilst at university, I worked in the retail sector to develop my sense of responsibility and acclimatised to a fast-paced work environment. There were technical demands to the job, as a trained shoe fitter I had to follow the fitting process and communicate my expertise to the customers to help them find the right product. This role was beneficial in the development of my interpersonal skills, as I had to understand what the customer needed and deliver based on their criteria. I took pride in my work, ensuring customer satisfaction, and I exceeded my annual sales targets by £1000 and was frequently sales target incentives.
