Both George and I were at Avanade from the very early days of the company through its maturation into a mid-sized company. The IT shop needed to be solid, scaling to meet the needs of a quickly growing business but at the same time leveraging leading (bleeding) edge technologies from Microsoft due to our business model. It is quite a challenge to balance those conflicting directives, and George's flexibility as an individual contributor, technical thought leader and people manager throughout his time there was key to the success of the IT organization. George is passionate about technology, as evidenced through his professional publications that he collaborated on in his "copious spare time" outside of work. Avanade is lucky to have that kind of deep technical expertise in house! As Development Manager, George worked with the department leads for QA, Operations, Program Management, and Infrastructure to set direction for the IT organization in project selection, execution and ongoing sustaining of the solutions we built. George was thoughtful and methodical in his approaches to solving problems with his peer group, taking point on estimation exercises to help leadership make sound decisions about what projects we could reasonably tackle in the coming quarters. George is passionate about technology, but he is equally passionate about fostering the development of his team members. He actively looks for ways to grow his people in their technical skills as well as in their own leadership skills. He pushes his team to grow in ways that may not always be the most comfortable for them, coaxing the more reclusive people on his team to be more open about sharing brilliant ideas publicly, and encouraging the less technically experienced people to embrace new technologies, dig in, and become experts. That blend of passion for technology and people management is rare to find, which is why I would be thrilled to work with George again if given the chance.

George is an outstanding leader. He displays great confidence in his employees that compels us to perform at our very best. He fosters a challenging and interesting environment that is a pleasure to work in. As a career manager, I owe much of my success at Avanade to him because he provides opportunities to be a 'hero' and show your value to the department and company. George is simply a great manager!
