Research project to create a suitable modelling environment to assess the operational requirements of cryogenic distillation column systems for the separation of hydrogen isotopologues at future DEMO-class fusion power stations. Provided in-depth design and process modelling of packed multi-component distillation column systems in Aspen Plus using a scenario-based approach. Created a spreadsheet tool which calculated flooding point, minimum wetting rate and feed location as a function of stripping and rectification section diameter from simulated column profile and physical property data. Provided improvements to the physical property predictions within Aspen Plus for future research and development using equations of state and correlation analysis. Conducted sensitivity analysis, optimisation, and data analysis for process development in Microsoft Excel and MATLAB. Provided detailed report of all research findings. Show less

Rotated around the operations, maintenance and safety departments to gain an appreciation for how downstream assets are managed and to explore my interest in the energy sector. Undertook operator roles in tank changeovers, tanker offloads and routine checks such as tank dips. Installed spectacle blinds following an external HAZOP to minimise the change of operator failure when turning valves on jetty manifold. Completed ADR awareness training and gained exposure to practices such as LOPA. The experience highlighted the importance of a strong safety culture and effective inter-departmental communication in the management of downstream assets. Show less
