Long-standing member of Foreign Affairs Committee and Defence Committee and Vice Chairman of the Special Committee on Terrorism. Commissioned into the Intelligence Corps, first operational appointment was in Borneo during the 'Confrontation' conflict. Spent many years engaged in counter-terrorism in Northern Ireland and elsewhere. Awarded MBE in 1973. Service in Germany included 5 years in Berlin, first as a specialised unit commander, and then as Chief of Staff of the British Sector and senior Intelligence staff officer in 1989. Previously liaison officer and instructor at the German General Staff College (Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr).Member of the Cabinet Office Assessment Staff prior to his last military appointment Brigadier (Brigadier-General) at NATO Headquarters, Brussels.
