Gemma is an outstanding human and leader - kind, reliable, creative and well-respected. With extensive management experience in the arts and community sectors, Gemma has developed a depth of understanding of how organisations, people and processes work which brings great integrity and flexibility to her approach. A true professional who combines her expertise in strategy, stakeholder engagement and operations with a genuine care for people and community. I have no doubt Gemma’s leadership approach will continue to soar in demand as the world moves toward a future of work that values people, communities and the environment alongside economic success.

I first encountered Gemma when I was her manager with RMIT Creative (then RMIT Union Arts). Gemma came to the team as the Arts Administrator and soon became involved in supporting all of the creative programs across performing arts (including producing and ticketing for the long running annual kids' shows), first site gallery program, creative arts, dance, creative collectives and events (including large scale events such as orientation). Gemma brought an inimitable working style, with high levels of creative organisation which was much needed in a diverse and high output arts unit. Her job varied from producing commercial theatre shows, to gallery shows, partnerships with festivals and major arts events, to being a board member, and to consoling anxious students often found lingering around her desk. Over this time I have seen Gemma explore and expand her interests and expertise which is always grounded in community connection and consultation, empathy and respect. I've had the privilege of continuing to develop my relationship with Gemma, to work on creative projects and also developing our working relationship into a friendship. To work with Gemma is a joy and an experience which I highly recommend.

A philanthropic organisation established to honour the life of respected Melbourne businessman Donald Macfarlane, The Macfarlane Fund's primary focus is to offer financial support across the career span of visual artists, with three main funding streams developed at graduate, mid-career and senior levels. In addition a discretionary fund is available for one-off donations for special projects considered to be worthy or important. Underpinning its development is a rigorous approach to decision-making, and a commitment to being flexible, effective and responsive to artistic practice and initiatives in a way that challenges established modes of giving.
