My PhD dissertation investigated the causes of historical Japanese economic growth, and is titled ‘Government Institutions and Economic Development in Tokugawa Japan: A Tale of Systems Competition’. I used innovative and detailed methods to gather and combine micro- and macro-economic data from over 250 years’ historical sources. The projects included a new, accurate, fast and labour-saving method for estimating a monthly GDP, for which I was the lead researcher.
