Signal processing, embedded systems, firmware and software development. I have designed or had major input on the design of the electronics subsystems in almost all of Russell NDE's instruments. Now happy to be fulfilling the role of the gray-haired guy who remembers why certain things ended up being done the way they are around here. Though we mostly sold and serviced Apple products, Galactica also carried a variety of other lines of "microcomputers", as they used to be known. I received full training on Apple II, III, Lisa, and the 1984-era Macintosh, as well as Cromemco and Osborne 1 computers. I also serviced Heath/Zenith and Exidy Sorcerer computers, and the occasional S-100 business system that came into our service shop. We were also teetering on the edge of the on-line world to come. We ran our own BBS for a short while, and sold subscriptions to The Source and CompuServe, and modems and terminals. Little did we know what was to come!

I repaired, maintained, and programmed some of the smaller computers in the Department of Computing Science. (Here I was exposed to many different minicomputers and microcomputers -- another invaluable education.) Orthon was one of the first computer stores in Edmonton. I hung around there so much, they finally decided to put me to work and hired me part-time for a few months -- great fun! I worked in the Instrument Repair department, repairing and maintaining various electronic instruments throughout the ARC's main facility at the time. (This was my first full-time job in my chosen industry. It was an excellent education on a wide variety of instruments and computers I might otherwise never have encountered. And Jim Kinasewich was a pretty cool boss!) I worked in the Instrument Repair department, repairing and maintaining various electronic instruments throughout the ARC's main facility at the time.
