Gary is a truly one of a kind teammate. He joined Datica while the company was at a crossroads and within a few days he was leading two of the largest projects at our organization. And Gary worked his tail off to make sure that our organization came out looking good. Regardless of the ask, he always went out of his way to help customers and tackle problems, even when they aren't specifically within his scope of work. I've appreciated his ability to break down highly technical issues into lay terms so that everyone can understand exactly what he means and the downstream implications of the solution he proposed. More than anything though, he's shown a true bias for action - jumping on action items or problem areas without someone needing to ask him to do so. If given the opportunity, I would gladly work with Gary again in the future.

I had the opportunity to work with Gary at MedNet while his team was transitioning a traditional healthcare application from a colocated datacenter to AWS. Despite the fact that the application platform was not built around a cloud-native architecture, Gary's team was able to successfully complete this challenging project. Gary has a positive and gregarious personality, and he is a joy to work with. He loves working with new technologies and he has good instincts related to modern IT architectural patterns. Gary is a hard worker and he would be an excellent contributor and leader at any organization.

Used Terraform to build new infrastructure in Azure ARM and Saltstack to securely connect and manage systems in Azure Classic and in Azure ARM. Integrated Bitbucket and Saltstack to initiate a build process when any of the 8 repositories were merged. The build process downloads the latest code from the bitbucket server and then builds it on the build server with some minimal API endpoint testing to verify a successful build. It then packages the build into a tar file that is copied to Azure file storage. The salt server then initiates a job on web servers and if needed worker servers to untar the file to a local directory on each server. The last salt job changes the symlink to point to the new directory structure built from the tar file. The Terraform and Salt code are designed to allow the customer to build multiple environments for testing, staging, and deployment of new infrastructure. Conceived ideas, gathered requirements, formulated plan and project, gained buy-in, coordinated project plan, and budget, completed approval processes, and served in lead role during implementation. * Designed and executed complete rework of user desktop environment that provided more consistent and predictable performance by redesigning network for Cornerstone, bringing all desktops to common software version, and by instituting version control over a core set of software, operating system, and hardware. * Championed long-term vision strategy and guidelines for storage of data at Carlson, addressing servers and personal workstations. * Evaluated and compared vendor offerings presented to Carlson using strategy. * Launched and implemented a project to backup local disk on all workstations, on-site and remote, transforming local hard drives into managed assets and reducing the need for file servers. * Published long-term strategy in a book explaining how Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) models could be used to define strategy and vision that would benefit companies. * Achieved national recognition for work in designing and implementing “World’s Largest IP Storage Area Network” which used IP Ethernet as core to network, enabling redundancy, high availability, and remote back-up and off-site capabilities. * Earned citations in several notable magazine articles for solution’s capabilities.
