Gary was fantastic to work with as a Success Coach and then as an Associate Dean at LCC. He always had a student-first mindset, took initiative, and was collaborative. He related easily to all types of students and colleagues...He created a vibrant soccer club community! He is a dedicated, reliable, and thoughtful higher education professional.

Shawn Schultz, Ph.D.

Gary and I met in Kalamazoo, MI at the 2013 NACADA Region V conference, where he was purposefully paired with me as a mentee (we had a mutual connection via Grand Valley State yet had never met prior). At the time Gary was considering the potential for a career in housing or academic advising. I’m delighted he chose advising as a profession, and after accepting a position at UIC Gary has steadily rose through the ranks and wholly embraced this choice. Gary makes use of the many professional development and training opportunities available to him, and because of this and his ability to effectively network, he will no doubt go far! Rewarding is the fact that Gary is not only successfully and gainfully employed as an academic advisor for the past two-and-a-half years , but that he continues to engage and show an increasingly strong commitment to the profession.

As a Higher Education Leader and Student Affairs Professional, I strive to embrace/create a culture that is student-centric and emphasizes the importance of Access, Affordability, and Attainment. I believe education is the great equalizer and can be a transformative experience; however, institutions and systems within the institution must be 'Student Ready' and designed/re-designed to receive ALL students as they are. Furthermore, creating a greater sense of belonging helps to ensure that ALL student's unique needs are recognized and supported, subsequently creating an environment where they can maximize their potential and thrive. As the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, I was responsible for the day-to-day supervision, leadership, and management of the Center for Academic and Career Pathways (CACP). In cooperation with my diverse team of passionate professionals, along with campus and community partners, I helped create, implement, and evaluate processes and programs which always aimed to keep the student in mind first as decisions were made.
