Head of Medical Policy
-
May 1999 - Feb 2010
I was AXA PPP's Head of Medical Policy and Medical Underwriting. Medical Policy. This was the development of guidance on eligibility of claims and included examining new treatments to see if there is sufficient evidence to prove their effectiveness.Medical Underwriting Policy. This was to set policy for the risk selection of people taking out insurance.I ensured that both medical policy and underwriting were delivered effectively by working with customer service colleagues to review and establish new processes. The work I led produced annual savings of millions of pounds. I am an expert in Health Technology Assessment. I used horizon scanning to identify changes in medical treatments to assess impact on AXA PPP and plan accordingly.Working with pricing and marketing colleagues, I helped develop new products. This included assessment of claims incidence and anti-selection.I meet with large corporate clients and intermediaries to advise on changes in medical practice and implications for health costs. This can be through individual meetings or through presentations to groups in excess of 50 people. Show less

Consultant Public Health Physician
-
1991 - 1999
I became a Public Health Consultant in Berkshire in the early 1990s just at the start of the purchaser/provider split in the NHS. My primary role was purchasing and planning secondary care level acute health care for the 750,000 population of the county. During my time in Berkshire I changed services dealing with cancer, cardiovascular disease, physiotherapy, renal dialysis, eye disease and mental health. I used skills in data analysis and understanding of health care to support contracting with hospitals resulting in savings to the Health Authourity of hundreds of thousands of pounds. I was a lead of locality purchasing, which in many ways was a forerunner of commissioning groups now starting in the NHS. I was on the executive committee of two "total fundholding" pilots, one of which I chaired, which gave GPs a budget to buy a wide range of services for their patients. For 6 months I was acting Director of Public Health managing a staff of approximately 70 people. During which time I led a recall of women for cervical screening. This included handling the considerable media interest in this. Show less
