Cairn Risk has been established to meet the growing demand for pragmatic and proportionate risk management support to help enable the transition to net carbon zero in a safe and compassionate way. We are an independent, employee-owned consulting firm advising developers, owner-operators and technology providers, primarily around the generation, storage, transmission, transformation and consumption of clean energy. We help them assure and demonstrate risks to people, the environment and assets are being managed effectively. Unlike more mature industries, there are few precedents and limited data to help justify safe and reliable operation of the novel technologies that underpin energy transition projects. We need to think creatively and innovatively to develop robust arguments as to why technologies are safe otherwise we won’t deliver these projects. Effective risk management is key enabler of this energy transition and this proactive, can-do attitude is fundamental to our approach. The development and implementation of clean energy technologies such as renewable energy generation (wind, solar, tidal etc.), energy storage and alternative energy vectors such as the Hydrogen Economy, is only a small part of the energy transition jigsaw. Of equal importance is energy security. Sufficient energy must be generated from fossil fuels to meet current demand (in a safe and reliable way) providing time for the development and implementation of clean energy technologies to meet our long-term needs and net zero aspirations. At Cairn Risk we support and enable this much broader, transitional and transformational change. We're on the look-out for great people to help us become a leading independent risk consulting company enabling the energy transition. Leading not necessarily by revenue or size, but the extent of our clients’ trust in us, whilst creating an environment and culture where everyone has a stake and voice in the business and shares in our collective success. • Director - Clean Energy & Innovation
      • Apr 2014 - Jun 2021

As Sector Director of Risktec's Clean Energy business, I lead their support to organisations around the world to help them play their part in the global fight against climate change by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Whether their activities related to the generation, storage, distribution or ultimate consumption of clean energy, or the mitigation of the environmental impact of traditional energy sources, we helped them do this in a safe and sustainable way.As Director for Innovation and Digitalisation, I lead the service they offered their clients to help them embrace innovation and digitalisation to reduce their existing risks, improve what they’re currently doing, or do something new. I helped Risktec move with the times to help their clients manage their evolving risks effectively so that they can reap the benefits of advancing technology in a safe, sustainable and ethical way. Examples of the innovation I lead are the expansion of Risktec's Game Based Learning programme to a suite off 11 games, each of which promotes an understanding of a process safety theme across a workplace, including App versions, and the development of an electronic Safety Case. The e-SafetyCase provides an accessible, engaging and intuitive basis of safety which proactively drives and encourages safe operations, naturally evolves hand-in-hand with the facility as routine business, and provides a seamless link between hazards and the actions people need to take to ensure risk is reduced ALARP.Thirdly, as Risktec’s Marketing Manager, I oversaw all their corporate marketing materials/content including web and brochures, whilst also managing our Social Media profile and activities. • Director - Risktec Solutions (Glasgow) Ltd
      • Jan 2004 - Mar 2014

I lead the foundation of Risktec’s Glasgow Business from scratch in 2004 building it up to a ~£4.5 million turnover business with ~30 staff located across two offices in East Kilbride and Edinburgh.Risktec is an established, independent and specialist risk management consulting, training, inspection and research and development company with offices around the world. We assist clients in major hazard industries as well as commercial and public sectors to manage health, safety, security, environmental and business risk. The Glasgow business was established primarily on a programme of nuclear work secured from my previous employer British Energy. I then lead the diversification of the business to cover the Renewables, Defence, Oil & Gas and Transport sectors. This was achieved by working collaboratively with other Risktec offices evolving us into a highly resilient and robust business. As a founding Director, I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the business, including all facets of winning new business and managing and building our consulting team to deliver the high quality service our clients demand. In addition, I lead the development of a range of new services for the overall Risktec Group, including the development of our Game Based Learning programme, a highly innovative and effective way of communicating key process safety messages to everyone in a workplace, and the establishment of Risktec’s Renewables business. I successfully translated and tailored Risktec’s knowledge, experience and capability in supporting major hazard industries to suit the specific challenges of the Renewable Energy sector, winning a number of strategically important projects and directed these to establish Risktec as the premier risk and safety consultancy working within the offshore wind sector. I served as a Director of Risktec Solutions (Glasgow) Ltd up until the acquisition of the entire Risktec group in 2014 by TÜV Rheinland. Show less
