With the Centre being closed for nearly a year my initial duties were to get the centre back up and running. To be a first point of contact for anyone in the Selby District wanting to start their own business. Liaising with external agents ie banks, solicitors, Council, IR, local papers to ensure that if anyone went to them they would refer them to us. Diary management, basic business start up information. Typing correspondence, helping and assisting new enquirers where possible. To gain more local knowledge of the centre I initiated the Selby Business Awards where I had the role of event management, fund raising, press releases for the local paper and everything else that goes with sorting an event like this. I ran the events over a 3 year period and they proved very successful in not only getting the Centre known but bringing the businesses of Selby together. The Business Advice Centre was recognised by Business Link as being one of top centres in Yorkshire for Business Start up as statistics showed that there were more positive outcomes for start up businesses within our district than any other in North Yorkshire. We shared premises with Selby Training Centre, where I used to front the main reception for them and unfortunately when the Selby Training Centre closed we had nowhere else to go so the Selby Business Advice Centre closed too. I started off working here on the shop floor, working the twilight shift. This suited as the children were young so it meant that I could still work. After a couple of weeks I was trained on the till and then after that changed over to working evenings just on the tills. I then trained up to be a "runner" This was like a supervisor taking charge of the checkouts when Management were unavailable. I also had my own Sundays where I had to open and close the tills down, tally the safe and offer assistance where possible. Ensuring that Customer satisfaction and H&S was given at all times.
