      • Kleros is a decentralized blockchain arbitration service for the disputes of the new economy, built on top of Ethereum that works as a decentralized third party to arbitrate disputes in every kind of contract. The result is a dispute resolution system that renders ultimate judgments in a fast, inexpensive, reliable and decentralized way. • During my time at the fellowship, I will be researching on how to integrate Kleros into freelancing contracts, with a special focus on creating onboarding guides to educate freelancers on why and how to use Kleros as a dispute resolution platform. Worked with the Indirect Taxes Advisory team under the guidance of Ms. Neethu James and Mr. Brijesh Kothary. My tasks mainly involved drafting research notes and opinions to MNC clients in a bid to assist them in complying with the changing tax laws, this was often either due to the introduction of a new legislation or entering into a bilateral agreement with a foreign country. This internship introduced me to the world of tax laws and I got to witness how companies are ready to overhaul their product, design and branding just to comply with tax legislations. Apart from research notes and opinions, I also assisted the team in drafting a few representations proposing changes or requesting a delay in the implementation of draft laws on behalf of merchants organization. The partners and associates were extremely welcoming and guided me throughout my internship period. My time here was extremely productive and was extended by an extra month based on performance analysis, a few of the tasks included; • Drafted an advisory on structuring transactions to avail incentives under the India – UAE FTA • Advised service providers from hospitality industry on the scope of importing luxury cars as CBU under the EPCG scheme • Advised FMCG clients on complying with mandatory labelling of unit sale price under amendment to legal metrology rules • Assisted in drafting a representation for the jeweller’s association protesting the implementation of 2nd phase of mandatory hallmarking norms. • Clarified a plethora of client queries on goods classification for assessment under customs and GST. Worked primarily with Electricity and Commercial litigation teams under the guidance of Ms. Sumana Naganand and Senior Advocate Mr. Sriranga Subbanna respectively. My responsibilities included preparing list of dates and synopsis’ for important matters which were listed for final hearings, this was a twofold task, firstly I had to carefully draw out events often spanning across decades in a chronological manner and compile documents annexed right from the court of first instance and secondly prepare a brief and crisp synopsis summarising the whole matter with important arguments and issues we had relied on, for the reference of the representing advocate. Apart from this, I was also involved in extensive case law research and incorporating it with the arguments. The partners and the associates were kind enough to familiarise me to the nuances and intricacies of electricity laws and introduce me to the procedural workings of electricity tribunals like KERC & APTEL. A few highlights of tasks carried out; • Briefed the Additional Solicitor General of India on the matter of a Civil Appeal in the Supreme Court. • Worked on defence strategy in a matter concerning unilateral withdrawal of Power of Attorney. • Worked on the defence strategy in a matter involving assignment of Copyright on behalf of a music streaming platform. • Drafted an NFT contract. • Prepared case briefs for a number of matters that were listed for final hearing. The Internship introduced me to electricity disputes and enriched my understanding of commercial litigation. Show less

This was a holistic internship experience, where I was not restricted to work within the bounds of a particular team or a practice area, I got to work with the General Corporate, TMT and Employment Law teams. I got introduced to and was familiarised with a wide range of areas including Mergers and Acquisitions, Competition Law, FEMA, Company Law, FDI Policies, SEZ regulations, Zoning regulations, Technology Law, Industrial and labour laws. Majority of my work stemmed from concerned MNC clients who wanted compliance and regulatory assistance in planning to set-up businesses in India or adaption and re-structuring assistance for existing establishments to be updated with changing laws. Examples include, advising corporations on, incentives of setting up businesses in an SEZ, strategies to invest in office spaces or real estate to a foreign entity and updating clients on work from home regulations of the concerned department and presenting them a timeline on re-opening offices. A few notable tasks that were assigned to me in my individual capacity include; • Drafting an opinion/ note explaining all the incentives that can be availed for setting up a business in an SEZ. • Advised a real estate developer on compliance with laws for properties located near water bodies in the wake of latest judgements and amendments mandating buffer zones. • Drafted a legal advisory focused on FEMA and FDI policy for a foreign company trying to invest in office spaces and real estate in India without registering or establishing branch office locally. • Advised and drafted a legal opinion on winding up an explosives factory in Haryana. • Advised a company on method and manner of disposing e – waste in accordance with the latest regulations. • Assisted in preparing a standard employee handbook template and a state wise checklist of shops and establishment act classification. • Chambers of Senior Advocate K. Suman
    • Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
    • Intern
      • Jan 2020 - Mar 2020

I worked primarily on civil & commercial litigation matters under the guidance of Mr. K. Suman and Mr. Siddharth Suman. I was accorded the opportunity to build on my drafting skills, having drafted and reviewed plaints, written statements, I. A’s, agreements and notices. The partners were kind enough to let me accompany and assist them in a few matters right from the first client meeting, this gave me an idea of the circumstances in which individuals and businesses decide to approach the court of law and the manner in which experienced attorneys structure their litigation strategy from scratch. In one instance where the client was based out of Chennai, but the jurisdiction along with cause of action arose in Bangalore, and period of limitation to file a written statement was just a week away, we had to communicate with the client, compile documents, construct legal strategy, draft the reply and file it before the court, all in the span of 4-5 days. Secondarily, I also worked on IBC, SARFAESI, company law, family law, consumer law and administrative law matters. Notable mentions of a few matters that interested me include; • A dispute between a land owner and a real estate developer arising out of the JDA entered into between the two of them. The matter helped me understand the saturation of the real estate sector in the city and the impact of RERA enactment. • Assisting the proprietor of a luxury watch boutique in making an insurance claim after he had suffered losses on account of theft. • Final arguments in the high-profile defamation case of N.I.C.E vs. H.D Deve Gowda. With matters spread over Civil Court, High Court, Debt Recovery Tribunal, NCLT, Consumer Forum and Administrative Tribunal, the internship helped me experience the hustle of litigation, it also gave me a fair idea of legal advice and the importance of time bound action plan in commercial litigation. • S. Shankarappa & Associates
    • Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
    • Intern
      • Jul 2019 - Nov 2019

The firm specializes in criminal litigation, I worked under the guidance of Mr. S. Shankarappa, one of the most sought-after lawyers for criminal trial in the state. The main tasks assigned to me were legal research, drafting, regular court visits and record keeping of listed matters. I Drafted a number of plaints and notices for negotiable instruments matters, PCR complaints, bail applications and formulated questions for cross examination. Accompanied the litigation team to important hearings like, bail arguments, cross examinations and final arguments to matters that sprawled across the Magistrate, Sessions and the High Court, this helped me understand the art of crafting compelling arguments and the importance of coming up with spontaneous rebuttals in real time for a criminal law practitioner. I Incorporated extensive case law research into summary of arguments and case briefs, to be presented before the court. The most gratifying experience here was, when I drafted a PCR to be filed before the magistrate on behalf of a victim of sexual harassment after her attempts in filing a conventional police complaint and writing a letter to the city police commissioner had failed. The internship helped me understand the procedural aspects of a court and gave me an idea of the approximate timelines involved in a criminal trial. Show less
