As mentioned in my summary (because it is too good to go past) the military did not know what a copywriter was. They assumed it was a photostat maker so, they promoted me, armed me and put me in charge of the copying machine. They also gave me top secret clearance while arresting and incarcerating me briefly for writing anti-apartheid rants to the Rand Daily Mail. I volunteered four times for active service during the Angolan War but was thwarted by my Sergeant Major who I foolishly helped complete the synonyms crossword puzzle in the Rand Daily Mail. I believe he remained blissfully unaware of the leftwing editorial content of the Mail until his puzzling was permanently suspended by a car bomb which killed everyone in my section two weeks after I left:( On a lighter note, he said that he liked being able to complete the crossword and that my duty to my country was to shoot jammers of the Rank Xerox machine and to help him complete the crossword puzzle. He did let me volunteer for Radar Station Guard Commander duty where he knew I was unlikely to stray into harms way. Joseph Heller was not joking when he wrote Catch 22.
